Career Mistakes to Avoid

We've all had our fair share mistakes and have learnt a lot from them.

There is a wonderful saying,

A smart man learn for his mistakes; but a wise man learns from other peoples mistakes.

Sharing a few career mistakes I have made in my 20s - so that you can avoid doing the same

Less communication with senior leaders        

I worked extremely hard, but did not keep the management informed of the work I was doing.

You cannot magically expect your boss to notice and acknowledge your hard work. Actively 1:1 conversations with your senior leaders to

• discuss your work
• ask questions
• provide feedback and inputs

Not attending informal events        

These allow you to build personal connections with your colleagues and seniors which can go a long way to help in your day-to-day work as well.

Don’t think of them as a waste of time but rather as an opportunity to build long term relationships

Assuming someone will ALWAYS guide me        

You bring real value to your company when you have the ability to figure things out on your own.

Not speaking up        

There were times when I was unable to understand certain tasks, but I hesitated to ask since?‘it was my job to know it already.’

Be vocal if you don’t know something. we only learn by asking.

Believing that doing good work is enough        

Doing good work is merely a table stake. If you don’t know how to-

• sell yourself
• build a brand for yourself
• build your reputation

doing good work is not enough.

Saying Yes or No to everything        

Taking too much on your plate and not being able to deliver is the worst move ever.
