The Career Journey of William Acosta, Senior Technology Leader

I’d like to highlight the career journey of William Acosta, a Senior Leader on our team. In his role managing the Core Customer Technologies team, William is constantly finding new and innovative ways for the business to harness technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning. Outside of work, he takes part in martial arts and has Brown belts in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo. William is also active in outdoor sports activities, including volunteering as an ice climbing and winter mountaineering instructor for the Colorado Mountain Club.

William’s interest in artificial intelligence and machine learning was sparked when he was a researcher in the field. After earning his PhD at Notre Dame, he focused his research on big data and continuous machine learning on streaming data.?

William says, “A significant part of my research and industry experience before joining DISH was centered around leveraging cloud services in order to scale data processing and machine learning capabilities. While at DISH, I served on the Advisory Board for the Data Science program at Bowling Green University and also was appointed a visiting faculty position where I led research on techniques for continuous training of adaptive machine learning from streaming data.

As a result, when I was managing the Enterprise Data Science team at DISH, one of my biggest goals was migrating the team’s technology from on-premises to cloud as well as transforming how the team worked to be aligned with the broader IT agile practices. This was a game-changer and allowed us to leverage cloud resources to take on and deliver significantly more machine learning products and projects.”

In reflecting on his DISH career, he talks about how he is constantly paving the way for new innovation:

“My focus is on enabling the teams to take on and lead new initiatives such as blockchain and our enhanced customer service applications. By consolidating information in the cloud, we’re able to make better, well-informed decisions for the business through improved forecasting models and continuously improve the customer experience.”
