Career Development - The Security Institute way

I have done a couple of articles now that try to inform, and let people know where to get help with their career progression but NOW HELP IS NOW AT HAND.

So, after significant investment the Security Institute has designed and bought a professional development platform from ABintegro for members to use.

If you are not a member, look at what kind of stuff you are missing out on!

The portal is full of AMAZING things and it is laid out in such a colourful and easy way to navigate. It covers everything from career assessments and planning, management skills, job hunting, CV planning and interview skills. But what is equally impressive are these podcasts which cover all the essentials of CV and interview training, too what potential answers to interview questions could be and loads more..

But do not worry if podcasts are not your thing, there is an extensive written resource library which covers pretty much the same topics and a few more thrown in for good measure. Cant be bad can it!

To get all this useful content and more, you need to bite the bullet and join the Security Institute.

Now there are just three more things I will touch on, one is the E-Learning Hub and the second is the CPD scheme and third the Mentoring Scheme.

LOVIN THE E-HUBBIN

The e-learning hub has many, and I mean many articles to develop business skills, interactive e-learning courses and other things that really would be too much to address in this one article. If you quickly glance at the picture below then you will see what I mean. The screen actually scrolls again to unleash a flood of information, which then I have to scroll at least 3 times to look at it all!! This detailed and in depth content is sourced from a variety of professional sources and well known contributors within their field of expertise. Win all around I think!!

Benefits of joining the Security Institute: A professional institute that genuinely cares about the security industry and the professionalisation of their members.

If we carry on with the sharing and caring nature of the Security Institute, they have a CPD scheme which is run by the Institute, but open to all members and NON-MEMBERS. Yes you heard right NON-MEMBERS

CPD- THE SyI FREEBIE

Continual Professional Development is one of the cornerstones of being a professional. It demonstrates to future employers that your knowledge is up to date, relevant and that you care about your knowledge and reputation as a professional. I devised the hashtag of #36andin for people to use once they have joined up to the CPD scheme and are on their way to CPD super stardom.

There are various CPD events which count towards the 36 points and you should look on the website or LinkedIn groups to see when the next events are up and there are other ways to gain points. You will be surprised how quickly they add up and how much you actually do without realising.

Click the icon below to take you to the CPD website:

To take a quote from the website:

We are committed to raising standards in the security profession and encourage everyone to think about how they can continue to develop and how they help and support others. Our Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Toolkit is an essential way to track how you keep up-to-date with latest issues and developments in security and management, giving participants a competitive edge over other practitioners, enhancing confidence and competence.
Our Toolkit helps you plan your personal development activity and tracks your achievements to reach set standards year on year. The CPD Toolkit is updated and published each year and is a self-administered method of identifying and recording learning. We challenge you to achieve 36 points or more each year.

Mentoring Scheme

These schemes were predominately aimed at the more seasoned professionals helping out the younger professionals, but no longer. This platform is geared towards people who need a little guidance or advice. It can range from a young professional giving a seasoned pro a run through the perils of social media, or a seasoned pro giving advice about contract accounting.

Mentoring is a great because it gives the end user guidance by asking questions and not giving the answers directly. It expands the minds and offers thought it an area that you are not used too. Learning from a mentor will do you the world of good and becoming a mentor will serve you even better.

On this platform you can register to be a mentor and mentee, we all need to know something and believe it or not we don't know everything. It is another offering of the SyI to their membership base and it absolutely beneficial for anybody who wants to get ahead.

Joining the Security Institute

Just to add, to join us click the icon below and pay attention to the monthly direct debit option... Yes a monthly direct debit option! Now there is no excuse not to join

There is also a really good Young Members Group if you are under 40 and looking for like minded professionals to connect with then come along. Currently we have our own LinkedIn page so look up The Security Institute - Young Members Group and ask to join, even if you are not a member and wish to see you'll be welcome.

Please share this article and raise awareness of the SyI and their work.

It certainly did Paul, and we are gathering momentum!

It took a lot of work from a lot of people to get these up and running. It's all about 'adding value' as individuals via your SyI membership. In turn the security sector will become the professionalism that it should rightly be recognised as....excellent article and thanks for posting.
