The economy is in a state of flux and there is no telling when it will rebound. This has left many people feeling uncertain about their job security. If you are one of these people, you may be wondering if there is anything you can do to recession proof your paycheck. One new work trend that has emerged in response to the uncertain economy is called career cushioning. So, what is it? And more importantly, should you jump on the bandwagon?
What is career cushioning exactly?
Inspired by the dating world, career cushioning is essentially an insurance policy for your work life. In dating, the strategy known as "cushioning" is entertaining alternative options to soften a potential breakup. This is now being applied to the working world and employees are actively, but discreetly, apply for new roles even if happy in their current one.
This is a departure from the traditional practice of seeking job security by making yourself invaluable and working even harder in your current role. Rather than having your eggs in one basket, career cushioning encourages you to spread your eggs around. The idea is that if the job market takes a downturn and suddenly there are fewer jobs available, you will have other offers to fall back on.
Why now?
This new workplace trend is growing in popularity for two major reasons. First, the recent tech layoffs have rightfully spooked workers. According to Quartz, 33,000 employees have been laid off since October 2022. It's only November. With no indication of when the economy will turn around, job seekers have started to prepare back-up plans.

Second, employees are craving a more holistic approach to work as a result of the pandemic. According to Linkedin's Global Talent Trends Report, candidates value three priorities: work-life balance, flexible-work arrangements, and up-skilling. In other words, they are seeking roles that offer job security, balance and growth. Career cushioning affords them an opportunity to find the best role for their personal and professional lives.
Career cushioning in practice
Career cushioning can take a few forms, but the most important thing to remember is that it's about being proactive. One approach, and the most talked about, is to apply for new jobs for added security. This way, you'll have a backup plan in place in case you do lose your current job. Also, take a look at your network. Are you constantly meeting new people and expanding your circle? If so, you're likely to hear about new opportunities before anyone else. Another way to create a career cushion is to start a new side hustle. This can provide extra income. Finally, it's important to actively develop new skills, even when you're not planning on changing jobs. By continuously learning and growing, you'll make yourself more marketable and better prepared for whatever comes your way.
Final Thoughts
There's no such thing as job security, but there is?career security. Career cushioning is simply another take on this. It's always important to invest in your career and explore opportunities for growth. Beyond your own sense of fulfillment, it can provide a sense of security for yourself and your family. Having?a personal brand, marketable skills, and a strong network?can help shield you from uncertain economics times. These are things that an employer can never take away and will benefit you throughout your career journey.
