Beat the Bots: 5 Tips for an AI-Optimized Resume

According to SHRM (the Society of Human Resource Management), 33 percent of all professionals using artificial intelligence (AI) for recruiting are using it to review or screen applicant resumes. For job applicants, this means it is time to make sure your resume is optimized to appeal to AI as much as possible.

Here are a few tips and tricks to ensure your resume is readable for artificial intelligence compatibility:

  1. Use a resume scanner such as Jobscan to find out if your resume is AI-friendly. Resume scanners will compare your resume with the job description or job posting and provide a score on how well it matches. Obviously, the higher the score, the more likely your resume will be seen as a match on the recruiter’s end.
  2. Add the exact job title you're applying for to your resume headline. This will involve frequent changes but will enhance the match.
  3. Add the precise keywords, including acronyms, from the job description/ advertisement to your resume to increase the chances of it appearing in the recruiters’ search. For example, use “CRM” instead of “Customer Relationship Management” if the ad uses the acronym – or consider including both.
  4. Consider including the reason for leaving positions if there are frequent jumps or gaps in your work history (i.e., note if your position was downsized or eliminated).
  5. Include details about the employer industry, and include keywords that match their work, industry, or customers.

For Resume Formatting, Consider These Tips

  • Avoid graphics
  • Use one font that is easy to read
  • Use conventional styles – this is not the time for fancy formatting and graphics
  • Use single spacing
  • Use clear and standard headings


In general, we recommend using a no-frills resume that is adaptable to keyword matching with job postings to garner the attention your resume deserves. Is your resume ready to pass the AI test? It’s worth taking the time on the front end to make sure your resume meets these guidelines to ensure it gets noticed regardless if AI or a human is doing the screening.
