The Career Compass: Navigating Nonlinear Paths

I've had the privilege—or challenge, depending on how you look at it—of working for 10 different employers since 2007, across four countries. My career path has been anything but linear; it's been more like a roller coaster. For years, I felt as though my jobs were choosing me, rather than the other way around. Economic downturns, a global pandemic, and other life events kept pushing me in different directions. But everything changed when I received some invaluable advice.
At the time, I was living in Shanghai and applying for jobs somewhat haphazardly. I was already employed in a challenging role, but the company culture left much to be desired. My application caught the eye of Apple's talent lead in Shanghai. Instead of dismissing it, she invited me for what I thought would be an interview.
To my surprise, she clarified that she hadn't called me in for an interview. She had seen something in my CV that reminded her of her own early career—a lack of clear direction. She shared her own journey and gave me a piece of advice that changed everything: "You need to think about what your priorities are: the job itself or the company culture."
That advice was a revelation. I chose the latter and applied for an entry-level Customer Support role at Booking.com—a job I had sworn never to do again. But the culture, the people, and even the casual atmosphere during the interview convinced me to take a step back in order to leap forward later. This decision allowed me to grow faster than ever before and take control of my own career trajectory.
