Career Change Opportunity

Career Change Opportunity

How did you get involved in the Indigenous Careers Program?

I had been working as a boilermaker since I left high school and was keen for a change. I really want to get a job that interests me so I’m keen to develop skills in a new trade. I saw that Harness Energy was advertising traineeship opportunities on their website so I applied and got accepted. I started the program in February 2022 with onboarding and training in Chinchilla.

What are you doing in the program?

My first rotation was with Veolia Water. They showed me how their water operators run the plant including daily tasks and maintenance. I’ve been in the control room and labs and had a go testing the water for ammonia and hardness. I learned a lot. It has been an information overload but I’m picking it up. I’m back here for my second rotation in electrical instrumentation

What are you enjoying about the program?

I am really enjoying learning new skills and meeting new people. It’s been great connecting with the other trainees at camp and at work. The team at Veolia Water is also really great to work with and learn from.

Would you recommend the program to your family and friends?

Yes. Definitely. My family often ask me about what I’m doing. I talk to them about the program and try to inspire them through leading by example.

For anyone thinking of joining the program, I tell them don’t be shame. Give it a go. If you don’t try it, you’ll never know what you can become. Be open-minded to learn and meet new people.

“Greg has been a pleasure to have onsite. He has demonstrated initiative in all aspects of our operation and has been very willing to actively participate in work wherever he can.” Zane Skuse, Plant Manager (QGC) Veolia
