If you currently feeling trapped in a monotonous job, yearning for a sense of purpose, greater fulfilment, and higher pay this article is for you.

If you are battling with self-doubt and imposter syndrome, plagued by the fear of not being skilled or talented enough to advance this article is for you.

Lastly if you are living paycheck to paycheck, struggling to make ends meet, and yearning for financial stability and growth in your career this article is for you.

I am going to give you my simple 3 step model I use while also providing actionable steps you can take today to begin to achieve a greater sense of purpose, fulfilment, and higher pay.

The advice I am going to give you works, because it has worked for me and for others. Unfortunately the truth is a lot of you will read this article without applying the information. I can say with confidence everyone that has applied this information made progress as early as 1yr but generally for most it takes 1.5-2yrs years to gain traction before you see the results.

I hope that you apply the information so you can be one of the ones that experience career success.

Now lets start with the overall mental model to begin.

3 Step Mental Model for Career Success:

Step 1: Where Do I Want To Be?

It never fails, but every time I mentor or coach someone this is often the hardest barrier for someone to overcomes. This question is all around clarity and getting specific on what you are actually looking for in your career.

The common response I get is, "I just want to make more money." Which is nothing wrong with that but it is not clear enough to get you to that endpoint.

Step 1 begins with a clear goal. This goal must be motivational for you to make the change you want.

To help guide you here are some questions you need to ask yourself:

  • What is your long term career goal?
  • How does this benefit you and the business? Think in terms of value add.
  • Why do you want to move this issue forward and present this to your boss? FYI coming to your boss just wanting to make more money is not a good strategy as it doesn't separate you from the pack.
  • Why not leave things as they? Hard pill to swallow but really think on this.

Step 1 is all about you clarifying where you want to be.

Here are some quotes to think on and hopefully create some motivation to do the work on gaining clarity.

"Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible." - Tony Robbins

"Begin with the end in mind" - Stephen R. Covey

"If you don't know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else." - Yogi Berra

Step 2: Where Am I Now?

This is about level setting and degerming how far or how close you actually are to your goal. This is an important phase as this phase is about you, your personality, your strengths, your weaknesses, and your current situation.

I want you to take a hard look in the mirror and judge yourself. I also want you to get the opinion of those who will speak the truth to you in love. You are digging for what you need to maximize on, areas to develop, and places to add needed skillset.

Step 2 is about your current state. Now lets get clear on you understanding of personal strengths and development areas through these questions.

  • Are you motivated to make the necessary changes or do you just want an outcome without doing the work?
  • How much control do you have over the outcome? Remember you can only control your attitude, actions, and response at the end of the day.
  • Be real about who has control over your opportunities and how much control they have? You work for a boss, you need to know your boss and their tendencies. This will be covered in another article.
  • What skills, resources, and strengths will you need to reach career success?
  • What actions have you taken? What actions steps are you willing to take and when?

Step 2 is about getting yourself the right information to begin taking action to achieve career success.

Here are some quotes to think on and hopefully create some motivation to do begin taking massive action:

"The future depends on what you do today." - Mahatma Gandhi

"Action is the foundational key to all success." - Pablo Picasso

"Skills are not acquired by chance; they must be sought out and cultivated." - John Maxwell

Step 3: How Do I Get There?

Here is where we bring in all of the insightful information to combine in to a plan where if done consistently will have you gain a greater sense of purpose, fulfilment, and higher pay.

This is the most tactical part but will also be the easiest part if you took the time to gain clarity on steps 1-2. For me step 3 created the greatest motivation. This was the first time I felt empowered, in control, and knew what I needed to do to get what I wanted out of my career.

Step 3 is about build a clear motivational, inspiring, and empowering growth plan. This growth plan will have targets, a timeline and success measures.

This is enough information for now though. You are going to have to subscribe if you have not already to receive next weeks article where I will go into depth into the following areas:

  • Matching skills with business needs.
  • Making sure your plan matches your long term career goals.
  • Which skills to maximize as you can only develop a small amount at one time.
  • The actions to take and development percentages of how to utilize time for maximum impact.
  • Timescale and how to predict success without seeing the money to keep you motivated.
  • Who you will need to support and the type of support you will need.

If you put forth the action this blue print will render to you what helped me go from a 50K income job to over six figures in only 2yrs while being new in the field.

If you enjoyed this please share this others as it is my goal to help as many people possible achieve career success and gain greater fulfilment in their jobs while becoming leaders in their industry!?
