Career Basics Course: Week 7, Day 31

“Regardless of our title or years of experience we can learn from each other. Through mentoring and by being open to learn we can reach our ultimate potential.” — Lily Benjamin

List Twenty People Whose Careers You Admire

THIS IS A LIST you will continue to add to and use consistently whether you are searching for a job or not. It is a practice akin to creating a course packet -- it will provide inspiration, direction, and unexpected opportunities.

This is not about listing celebrities. The less famous someone is, the better the fit for this list. This is about creating a list of people who are one, five, or ten steps ahead of you in pursuit of your dream career. You don't need to know them. You may only be drawn to a single aspect of their career. ...

These people will become potential allies, the people to track and watch out for at events. ...

Make it easy for yourself to capture names on the go -- whatever system you decide to use, if it's a notebook, a folder on your computer, or a simple spreadsheet, consider and think about the process of capturing the information, the more likely you are to do it.

Note: This is either ...

The Exercise

This is the largest list you will have to create and it will continually grow as you progress through the 50 steps. These 20 people will be potential bosses, interesting allies and your future peers. Make your personal list by following these steps:

  1. Make a list of 20 people who?are rethinking the industry you want to work in. Challenge yourself to go beyond the entrepreneurs and find the people who work for them. Find the individuals who have real jobs supporting and building these organizations and companies. These people will become your peers, your bosses and your friends. Where there is one, there are more. This is the first step to finding people that will support you and show you that making money and doing good is possible. You can also take the search offline or?attend events ?and track down the speakers. (Doyle - give yourself some latitude to think about individuals beyond your industry and include pioneers, leaders and individuals -- or organizations -- that are shaping their communities or living lives of purpose that matter to you.)
  2. Figure out where they hang out, speak, or otherwise show up.?How accessible are they? What paths did they take to do what they are doing? Who works for them? (Doyle - also feel free to draw upon individuals, artists, authors, creators, etc from throughout history -- and from science fiction ... and important source for me.)
  3. Did you find someone you might want to work for specifically??Send them this?company outreach email ?or use the?mentor you don’t know ?template. (Doyle - again, optional but feel welcomed and invited to do so; folks will surprise you all the time.)

Fantastic list Gerald Doyle! To be honest I need to spend some time working on a list of 20 people whose career I admire. There are a number of people who I've worked with that have been inspirational to see their drive, ideas and goals. There are others I don't know but have followed on social media or in the news. I'll work on my list this week and I think I'll start with Martin Cooper who led the team to create the first cell phone. I have met him on a couple of occasions at Illinois Institute of Technology where he has spoken as an alumnus of the school and where I had worked. His story is fascinating and he continues to inspire. One down and 19 to go. ??
