Career Basics Course: Week 5, Day 25!

“The gravity of the time is such that every new avenue of peace, no matter how dimly discernible, should be explored.” —?Dwight D. Eisenhower
"Leadership is not a matter of winning. The work is done in order to shed the light of awareness on whatever is happening: also, selfless service, without prejudice, available to all.” ―?John Heider,?The Tao of Leadership: Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching Adapted for a New Age
"All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well." ― The Optimism of Mother Julian of Norwich

Find Your Center of Gravity

IMAGINE FINDING A JOB that fits perfectly with the way you naturally are and the way you interpret the world around you. Finding and understanding what your center of gravity is will you achieve that.

Your center of gravity is a characteristig tied to the way you experience what happens to you. It is neither a good thing nor a bad thing. It simply exists, and we all have our own. It is a quality that helps you interpret your reality -- and often times it can be at the root of what you transition in and out of jobs. ...

Uniqueness, being alone, authenticity, acknowledgement, and feminine power are all examples of centers of gravity from individuals I've interviewed. It can be anything -- and often those closest to us can tell us what ours is. ...

Once you know your center of gravity, things will shift. You'll start to notice it at play in even the smallest of situations.

  • [consider creating a "gravity log," jotting down a small note each time you felt that you are making decisions based upon your center of gravity]

There is no right or wrong center. By identifying it, and noticing when it is at play, we relieve ourselves of te stress of having to change it. We can simply choose to ignore it when it isn't serving us and even find careers that benefit from our natural inclinations.

The Exercise

  1. ... spend time learning about your own center of gravity. (Ask a few close friends, family members, and perhaps a classmate or colleague about what they believe your center of gravity is; be sure that these are trusted individuals because sometimes the center of gravity suggested to us might be different from what we've held for ourself. If possible, try not to respond -- simple listen, especially if their view of your center of gravity creates some dissonance for you.)
  2. Now test your center of gravity. (With this knowledge, think about how you might make a decision -- differently, or the same but more consciously.)
  3. Create a "gravity log" ... Each time you make a note, ask yourself, "Is reacting this way working for me at the moment?" ...
  4. If you don't actively consider it, your center of gravity force you to naturally prioritize certain behaviors and decisions over others. What kind of career could benefit from this kind of sensitivity and prioritization? ... What social situations or workplace scenarios would actively benefit from your natural way of being?

Note: This is either ...

“You don’t get to choose how you’re going to die, or when. You can only decide how you’re going to live. Now” – Joan Baez

For me, ... the center of gravity has always been education, learning, and collaborating with others -- I might have said "helping others earlier in my life -- to co-create the lives that they were meant to live with abundance, purpose, fulfillment and love so that they have true freedom, the responsibility of which is to help others become free ... I like this quote very much ..

"Develop enough courage so that you can stand up for yourself and then stand up for somebody else." ~ Maya Angelou

Much peace,

Having worked in higher education admissions most of my career my center of gravity has been to be liked much like Dev mentioned. As a recruiter you are constantly putting your best self forward to build a relationship with students and families and present the qualities of the University. Although students have many options and I shouldn't take it personal but its difficult when you put your whole self into your job. In the end I relish the successes and move forward. As a manager there were times when a decision I needed to make wasn't always taken well and it leaves you feeling unliked. Here's where I needed to move past that center of gravity. Ultimately you need to find a place where you can be true to yourself. The following is a group picture of one the Admissions teams I had the pleasure of working with .Great memories.
