Career Basics Course: Week 1, Day 1

"If I’m remembered for having done a few good things, and if my presence here has sparked some good energies, that’s plenty."?–Sidney Poitier

Reconnect with Five Mentors From Your Past* [Way

"This exercise is about building momentum rather that the advice that mentors will share. For this to work, you don't even need to have had formal mentors -- it's the informal kind that count. Someone you have turned to in the past or a colleague who gives good advice or simply someone you look up to will do just fine for this exercise. The most important thing is that you have fine distinct conversations."

Note: This is either ...

For me, I will be reaching out to the following individuals:

  • Dr. Lydia Pettis Patton , former city manager, City of Portsmouth
  • Michael Patulak, friend since 1977 and 美国芝加哥大学 classmate
  • Dr Stephen King and Dr Jacqueline Bird at Rise St Lucia
  • Several colleagues at Jusoor, Jusoor (‘bridges’ in Arabic) is an international NGO with the mission of “Maximizing the potential of Syrian youth through education.”
  • And remembering Jane Brown, former Admissions Dean at Emerson College; without question the best leader that I've worked -- ever; she taught me a great deal about diversity, empathy, equity, respect and inclusion long before these phrases formed part of our daily practice. "Set an example ... that continues today."

Good luck with your outreach and conversations today -- and this week.

Zoe Hatch So here's Week 1, Day 1. Each of the articles is about a 3-5 minute read (or less); thinking about the "exercises" will vary but -- I think -- for any given day, I would reflect on and offer some initial thoughts and reactions to the themes that Dev proposes. As you'll see in the Weeks ahead, by colleague and friend of several decades, Al Nunez, has randomly selected the ordering of how we're moving throughout the text -- and, because there is order to the randomness in the universe, "this ordering works." Welcome to this journey; very glad to be joining you in this "walk about." Much peace. Gerald
