Hey !
Hope you’re doing well! Today, let’s get real about a struggle so many Gen X women face: getting passed over for promotions and opportunities we know we’re ready for. You’ve got the skills, the experience, the grit—but you’re still waiting for that nod, that green light. Sound familiar?
Why the Career Ladder’s Feeling Stuck
We entered the workforce ready to prove ourselves, and boy, did we. But as today’s workplaces zoom in on tech skills and “up-and-coming” talent, seasoned pros like us sometimes feel like we’re on the sidelines. And it’s not just because of our birth year; it’s a shift in priorities and, frankly, a misunderstanding of what we bring to the table. Here’s what’s up:
1. The “Tech-Savvy Bias”: Companies are moving at breakneck speed, and there’s this notion that younger folks somehow “get it” more. But let’s be clear: experience + adaptability? That’s the magic combo. And we have both.
2. Ageism (Yep, It’s Still Here): No one wants to say it, but it’s there. Many of us are dismissed as “overqualified” or seen as having skills that are somehow “too traditional.” (As if real-world problem-solving ever goes out of style!)
3. Double Whammy with Gender Bias: Being a woman in the workplace has its own hurdles, but add age into the mix, and you get overlooked twice as often. Leadership roles, major projects—some of these things seem to slip by us for reasons that have nothing to do with our abilities.
How to Take Back Control
If you’re tired of waiting for recognition that’s long overdue, here are a few ways to get yourself back in the game:

? Own Your Story: Don’t let anyone make your experience sound outdated. Frame it as a major asset! Make it crystal clear how your adaptability and strategic know-how make you invaluable right now.
? Brush Up, Don’t Bow Out: Is there a skill everyone’s raving about? Get it. Add some new tech tools or certifications to your list. Showing you’re all-in on learning what’s next makes it harder for anyone to ignore you.
? Build Your Circle: Find other powerhouse Gen X women who are in the same boat. Trust me—there’s strength in numbers, and together, we can create more opportunities, whether that’s sharing contacts, business tips, or just moral support.
? Think Outside the (Corporate) Box: Stuck in a place that won’t see your value? Consider freelancing, consulting, or starting something of your own. You’ve got the experience to do it on your terms, and that might be the fresh start you need. That's what I did.
Moving Forward
It’s frustrating when you’re ready to soar, and the powers that be don’t see it. But don’t let anyone underestimate what you bring to the table. We’re resilient, we’re smart, and we know how to get things done. Don’t settle for being sidelined.
Let’s keep this conversation going. Hit “reply” and tell me your story or your best tip. I’m here to help however I can.
Until next time,
Susie
