Career Advancement

How does one advance in their career? It's a question I am frequently asked. Here's my, if the good people at AA (for the record, I don't drink and never have) will permit me, 12-step program for career advancement, assuming you are already employed.

  1. Listen
  2. Learn
  3. Finish your work, then...
  4. Offer to help others (this is leadership by example)
  5. Be the first in and last out but...
  6. Exhibit excellent time management skills.
  7. Keep your private life out of the office.
  8. Don't gossip or get involved with discussions of politics or religion.
  9. Complain maturally not childishly.
  10. Make suggestions, with justifications, for improvements in policies and procedures.
  11. Constantly ask for feedback but never sound "needy." How can I improve? How could this have been better? How could the situation been avoided?
  12. Run towards the fire, not away from it. Put differently, be the one who tells the boss bad news, but always offer a solution. (Stay calm in a crisis.)
