Pacy & Wheatley have recently completed a care home refurbishment project in Hull, consisting of the refurbishment and extension of the facility to form an 18 bed care home. The project includes 3 new single storey extensions, with associated connections to existing roof lines and internal spaces.
The project includes 3 no new single-storey extensions, with associated connections to existing roof lines and internal spaces. Internal remodelling involving a full strip out, full internal below ground drainage reconfiguration. The internal layout and structural alterations. New Mechanical and Electrical installations throughout. Finishes are provided throughout to suit the client’s requirements. Externally a new garden area, fencing and the like will be provided, along with other enhancements to the property and its surroundings.
The Challenge
The major challenge that the site team faced was ensuring the surrounding neighbours were informed and considered throughout the development process. Inspection of the existing building early to inform the design progression and avoid late problematic design issues was also key.

The Solution and Key Achievements
A thorough survey of the existing building was undertaken to check and identify the suitability of the existing infrastructure, drainage and structure for the planned new interior layout. This did identify some potential issues which were quickly discussed and re-designed with the employer to ensure the design intent and special requirements were met.
We used our existing supply chain partners to ensure that the contractor design portions such as mechanical and electrical dealt with coordination and design matters early in the construction process.
The scheme was registered under Considerate Constructors and achieved good scores with regular updates and local resident involvement as it was sat in the middle of an existing housing estate and adjacent to the local furniture superstore. Deliveries were made just in time to suit the tight and busy site conditions. Due to the location, we were required to include flood defences to the entrance and most vulnerable areas.
This scheme was our first for our new client and employer Exemplar Healthcare. It’s success and completion to meet time and budgetary requirements and the proactive nature of our staff and teams has since led to further projects with the employer.
