Cardiac arrest
Introduction
Cardiac arrest is a medical emergency that occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating, leading to a cessation of blood flow to vital organs, including the brain. This condition is different from a heart attack, although both can be related. Cardiac arrest requires immediate medical intervention to prevent death or severe brain damage.
Causes of Cardiac Arrest
Cardiac arrest is usually caused by an electrical malfunction in the heart, leading to an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). The most common arrhythmia associated with cardiac arrest is ventricular fibrillation, where the heart’s electrical impulses become disorganized, preventing the heart from pumping blood effectively.
