Card Payment Surcharge Ban Underway

The Federal government is preparing to ban card payment surcharges from January 1, 2026, with an RBA review currently underway.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers said this move aims to get a better deal for people while promoting a more competitive payments system.

“Consumers shouldn’t be punished for using cards or digital payments, and at the same time, small businesses shouldn’t have to pay hefty fees just to get paid themselves.”

New data from Roy Morgan shows that 21 percent of Australians say they are planning to celebrate Halloween this year, and that of those participating, each person will spend an average of $93.
