One of my favorite places in the South of France, just an hour from the Spanish border in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, is the fortified medieval city of Carcassonne. I have been to a lot of castles in my travels but none are as spectacular as this one. It's like walking onto a?Game of Thrones?set, only it's real. Carcassonne is situated on a hill overlooking the Aude River and is known for its well-preserved fortified walls and historic structures. The city is also a UNESCO World Heritage site and a popular tourist destination.
The history of Carcassonne can be traced back to the Roman era when it was known as Carcasum. The Romans built the first fortifications around the city, which the Visigoths and the Moors later expanded. In the 12th century, the city was conquered by the French king, Louis IX, and the city's fortifications were further developed. The walls and towers of Carcassonne are a testament to the city's rich history and strategic importance.
The city's main attraction is the Cité de Carcassonne, the fortified medieval city. The Cité is a maze of narrow streets and charming squares lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants. Visitors can walk along the ramparts and take in the breathtaking views of the city and the surrounding countryside. The Cité is also home to the Chateau Comtal, the fortress that once served as the residence of the Counts of Carcassonne. The Chateau is open to visitors and offers a glimpse into the city's medieval past.
Another important landmark in Carcassonne is the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire and Saint-Celse. This beautiful church dates to the 12th century and is an excellent example of Romanesque architecture. The church is also home to some impressive frescoes and stained-glass windows. Visitors can also climb the church's bell tower for a panoramic view of the city.
Carcassonne is also known for its cultural heritage and its lively festivals. The city hosts several events throughout the year, including the famous Festival de Carcassonne, which takes place in the Cité every summer. The festival features music, dance, theater performances, fireworks, and a historical parade. The city also has a vibrant nightlife, with many bars and nightclubs open late at night.

Carcassonne is also an excellent destination for wine lovers. The city is located in the heart of the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region, known for its rich red and sparkling wines. Visitors can tour the surrounding vineyards and taste some of the local wines. The city also has several wine shops and bars where visitors can sample the local wines.
Carcassonne is a unique and fascinating city with a rich history and culture. The city's well-preserved fortifications and historic structures testify to its strategic importance and medieval past. The city's lively festivals and vibrant nightlife add to its appeal. Carcassonne is a great destination for tourists who want to explore the rich history of the south of France and are interested in wine culture. Whether you are interested in history, art, wine, or music, there's something for everyone in Carcassonne. There are direct flights from London and it's an easy drive from Beziers.?
