No....carbs ( officially known as carbohydrates) are not the enemy and do NOT make you fat! Carbs are your body’s primary energy source and are a crucial part of any well balanced diet. And, BTW- the brain ONLY functions on carbohydrates!
Eating too many calories whether it’s from protein, carbs or fats will cause you to gain weight. Eating too few calories can cause you to plateau on your weight loss goals or even GAIN weight!
Carbs are not only an energy source, but they also provide essential vitamins and nutrients for the ‘good’ bacteria in your gut. Plus they help stabilize blood sugar levels, help balance hormones, promote better digestion, help reduce the risk of diabetes, and reduce inflammation. You just need to eat complex carbs that are high in fiber. Why's that? It takes more energy (calories burned) to break down these foods. Fiber is the only carb that does’t turn to fat if it isn’t used as energy!
What foods are considered complex carbs? Fresh vegetables, fruit, legumes, lentils, brown rice, beans, oats, black eyed peas, whole unprocessed grains, buckwheat, sweet potatoes and quinoa.
Avoid simple carbs such as: sugar, white potatoes, white rice, pasta, chips, candy, store bought baked goods, pastries, cereals, sweetened beverages, energy drinks and white bread. Why? They spike your blood sugar levels, increase inflammation, cause weight gain, and increase the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and a host of other diseases. Who wants that? Not me!
Let's take a look at your needs to help you get the results you want to live a long healthy life! It is easier than you think and it is never too late to start! Who's ready to live their best life? If not now, WHEN?
