Carbs after 8pm?
Carbs after 8pm - "The after 8pm carb consent form”
There are many things in the modern world that have caught on and some aren’t within the fitness industry - take “selfie" for example originating from a single person stumbling across something which is now taken far too seriously..
'She squats bro’, ‘Bro food’ & ‘Gainz' (with a Z) to name a few within the world of training and diet.
But who was the first? To speak, tweet or hashtag such a term… The same goes for the idea of no carbs after 8pm and what was that persons physical condition was?
Some of you claim to cut carbs after a certain hour - post an image full of carb rich food, none the wiser you’re doing so!
The reason I question the appearance/physical condition of the first to use the rule is, adding in a cut off time for carbs is merely a calorie cutting method.. A trainer (with reasons) adding it into their clients dietary plan or even a novice using it as a way of avoiding hitting their usual calorific daily count, once they’ve made the decision to change.
It has become a ‘blanket term’ put into practice by some who aren’t doing any wrong, but at the same time are cheating themselves out of some well needed carbs! Working to the principle of energy in vs energy out to cut out carbs after 8pm for a shift worker or someone who can only train in the later hours of the day - is madness. A 9pm leg work out for someone who works and commutes to the city daily - without carbs... I’d rather chair a FAD diet seminar!
That being said - which source of carb you choose must be considered. A pizza or subway during the commute wouldn’t be what I’d recommend for reasons such as performance and digestion.
Sticking with the energy in vs energy out theory, taking tomorrows to do list into consideration can also determine the helping of carbs you have if the meal time goes over that ‘8pm cut off’… An analogy I like to use is - you wouldn’t fill your car up with petrol the night before you set off on holiday for 2 weeks. If the next day happens to be a Sunday and you have a breaking bad marathon lined up, that extra scoop of sweet potato may not be as necessary as it is prior to a Wednesday 6am HIIT training session
I, like many I know stick to the use of vegetables to hit those evening carbs. This may make portion sizes slightly bigger but with the wonders of Netflix and no excuse to move - zero reason not to get it all in. With the wholegrain alternative rices, pastas and grains being favoured for the meals during the day.
