Carbon credits have long been a significant component of the corporate sustainability landscape, offering businesses a way to offset their carbon emissions.
However, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) conducted an extensive review of its Corporate Net-Zero Standard, which has sparked a global debate on the effectiveness of carbon credits in corporate sustainability strategies. SBTi, which has validated climate targets for over 5,000 companies worldwide, found that many carbon credits are largely ineffective at reducing emissions. However, the organisation stopped short of ruling them out entirely, stating that more research is needed before drawing firm conclusions.
Could this shift the way businesses pursue their net-zero objectives?
In this week's news, The Royal Mint is set to become a pioneer in electronic waste recycling, leveraging cutting-edge technology to address one of the most urgent environmental challenges of the 21st century. In partnership with Canadian clean tech startup Excir , The Royal Mint is bringing this innovative technology to the UK. Further, Singapore takes a large step towards becoming Asia's carbon trading powerhouse with the launch of the Singapore Carbon Market Alliance (SCMA) aiming to accelerate climate action.
Finally, can airlines really go green? Air New Zealand has announced its withdrawal from the Science Based Targets (SBTi) and its 2030 carbon emissions reduction goals, raising questions.
