Carbon Budget Model of the Canadian Forest Sector (CBM-CFS3) Training
The carbon accounting team of the Canadian Forest Service (CFS-CAT) is pleased to announce the availability of self-guided Carbon Budget Model of the Canadian Forest Sector (CBM-CFS3) training (English version).?
As always, the training and model are designed for use by Forest managers, researchers, and modelers with a knowledge of Forestry, forestry and ecological data, and ecological modeling. The training package (CBM-CFS3 Self-Guided Training_English.zip) is available for download on the National Forest Information System (NFIS) CBM-CFS3 download page (https://carbon.nfis.org/cbm). A French version of the training is currently under development and is expected to be available in 2020/2021.??

So, my announcement of self-guided CBM-CFS3 training has no coordinated link to the development of the national C offsets program, however I am fairly certain that those developing the protocols are well aware of our models, as we use them for reporting Canada’s national forest GHG balance annually to ECCC. I’m not involved in the national offset protocol development process, so can’t say where the CBM-CFS3 may be mandated or recommended for use.?
The CBM-CFS3 has been publicly available since 2005, and training on its use was previously only available at in-person 3-day training workshops. Due to COVID19, and ongoing demand for training, we decided to develop the free self-guided version of the training.?The CBM-CFS3 is a stand- and ecosystem-level forest carbon model that allows forest managers and modellers to assess how to manage their forests in terms of carbon. It’s basically a decision support tool that allows you see how much carbon you have in your forest in various carbon pools (e.g., total ecosystem, biomass, dead organic matter, soil, etc.) now (or at some point in the past), and how much you’ll have in the future depending on how you manage it (e.g., if you increase harvesting, decrease harvesting, stop harvesting, redirect slash to forest products, expect increases or decreases in natural disturbances, etc.). There are ~220 different disturbance types that the user can apply in the model, each with specific impacts on carbon transfers, and the user has the option to set up their own specific disturbance type and define the carbon transfers for it as well.?
If a wood waste C offsets protocol requires forest ecosystem carbon accounting , the CBM-CFS3 could likely be used, however in terms of wood waste, aside from tracking dead organic matter carbon pools where harvesting slash ends up, any carbon that might be considered “wood waste” from harvesting that the user redirects to the forest products pool is simply summed annually in the results, and no further accounting is done on that carbon once it is in that pool and considered out of the ecosystem, in this model. The annual forest product pool carbon results from a CBM-CFS3 project could be exported for use in our harvested wood products model (CBM-FHWP), which breaks down those annual forest product pool carbon results into various products and lifecycle pathways, each with various rates of decay to the atmosphere and transfers to landfills, bioenergy, etc., so that carbon in harvested wood products can be tracked. The CBM-FHWP and supporting documentation, and training are currently under various degrees of development, and distribution and support is very limited at this time, however our team in Victoria uses the CBM-FHWP for Canada’s national-scale carbon reporting.

?Release of updated CBM-CFS3 version 1.2?
The carbon accounting team of the Canadian Forest Service (CFS-CAT) is pleased to announce the availability of the CBM-CFS3 version 1.2 (build number 1.2.7739.338). Please consult the "Updates" document posted on the National Forest Information System (NFIS) CBM-CFS3 download page (https://carbon.nfis.org/cbm) for the list of changes made to the model since the release of CBM-CFS3 version 1.2.7271.303, and version 1.2.7480.306 (limited distribution to those known or assumed to be applying the model in British Columbia). In addition, consult the "Known Issues" document, accessible in the CBM-CFS3 software by clicking on "Help" and then "Known Issues" in the main CBM-CFS3 window.?
Recent training workshops
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the CFS-CAT ceased in-person training workshops after March 2020, and began retooling to deliver 2-day virtual training workshops, and online self-guided video training. CFS-CAT trainers delivered two (unannounced) pilot virtual workshops from their homes in 2020 and 2021. The first, in August 2020, was limited to collaborating agencies in the U.S., and the second was open to a broader public group. In total 41 participants from four countries were trained.??
Future training
Self-guided online video training (English version) for the CBM-CFS3 is nearing completion, and will likely be made available in the coming months. Development of the French version should follow shortly after.?
Online training for our new spatially explicit version of the model, the Generic Carbon Budget Model (GCBM), is also under development in collaboration with moja global and The Linux Foundation. The GCBM is not as user-friendly as the CBM-CFS3, and user knowledge of Windows Command Line, scripting, and Python are definite assets for using this model. Self-guided online training for the GCBM should also be available in the coming months.
Work is ongoing to develop and improve the user interface and training for the CBM-FHWP model, and self-guided online training is at the initial stages of development, and may be available before March 2022.?
