Carbify: The Leading Carbon Offset Supplier Utilizing Web3 Technology

In recent months, we’ve witnessed a surge in carbon offset-related projects within the crypto space. Each is attempting to promote its unique token while aiming to ensure transparency for carbon credits. Despite these efforts, none of these projects come close to Carbify.

Unmatched Detail

Carbify takes transparency and detail to extreme levels beyond any other project. This is crucial now that companies are increasingly seeking high-quality offsets, transparency, and certainty. An offset without additionality and/or transparency can lead to reputational damage or even fines over time as it’s ‘greenwashing’.

Carbify geo-tags every individual tree planted. An NFT containing the trees data and geo-location is minted for each single tree. This data is immutable and cannot be altered. Thus, the initial link between the actual tree and the on-chain certificate (the NFT) is established. Subsequently, the tree absorbs CO2 from the air, which our smart contracts track in real-time. The CO2 is minted in ERC-1155 format with metadata, identifying the specific tree responsible (the geo location mentioned earlier combined with the unique tree ID) for absorbing each kilogram of CO2. In this way, we can pinpoint the exact tree for each kilogram of offsets, providing unmatched details to buyers about where the offsets occurred. Because we use blockchain technology the data is immutable, solid, publically available 24/7 and indisputable.

Right now, we maintain a registry of over 3 million trees, equating to 3 million?separate on-chain CO2 administrations.

Our approach is unique and unparalleled. A higher-quality CO2 offset does not exist. Period.

GCS & Carbify

The Global Carbon Standard (GCS) is a non-profit organization registered in the USA. It is responsible for monitoring Carbify’s planting efforts and validating them. The GCS has received approval from the United Nations at the highest level. This organization can be compared to the Gold Standard and Verra, but it focuses on transparency through Web3 technology instead of traditional (non-transparent) methods.

The GCS has some of the strictest rules available. Additionally, social impact and education are key requirements for GCS approval. They specialize in genuine reforestation, meaning they do not allow trees to be planted on plots where trees existed in the past five years. This is just one example of their stringent criteria. Carbify is audited by one of the strongest partners available.

Tree monitoring

Carbon debits are awarded based on the CO2 absorption by living trees. To ensure the integrity of this process, we employ satellite imagery and a dedicated ‘proof of life’ protocol to monitor each tree’s growth and health. Should a tree fail to thrive or diminish in size, its corresponding NFT is either marked or decommissioned. In its place, the owner is issued a new NFT linked to one of our ‘backup trees,’ ensuring each tree has a one-to-one backup system.

To incentivize the preservation of these trees, we compensate local caretakers with a maintenance fee, based on providing detailed proof of their work to protect the trees. This financial support extends for two decades following a tree’s plantation, establishing a sustainable alternative to deforestation. This model not only provides a direct financial benefit to local communities but also encourages their active participation in safeguarding their environment. Through this approach, we aim to make the conservation of trees a viable and appealing economic activity, promoting long-term environmental stewardship.

Certification

Honestly, being certified does not guarantee that a project is reliable. Lately, we have observed numerous issues with carbon credit projects, many of which were validated by reputable organizations like Verra and the Gold Standard. Despite this, certification remains a mandatory requirement.

Carbify has achieved the highest level of certification to ensure we are universally accepted. However, we remain skeptical of most carbon credit systems and place our trust in carbon debits instead.

Our co-founder, William ten Zijthoff, serves as a member of the United Nations expert board, emphasizing our active engagement in global discussions on environmental standards. Carbify is also a key participant in a working group that debates the future of carbon offsets together with some of the biggest companies in The Netherlands, underlining our commitment to shaping a more reliable and effective framework for environmental conservation.
