Capturing Stunning Night Sky Photography
Following recent events whereby I could experience the aurora whilst stood in my own back garden here in Essex, I thought I’d share with you 15 tips to help you capture stunning night sky photographs of your own.
Capturing this requires careful preparation and attention to detail. Here are some tips to help you get started:
1. Choose the Right Location: Find a location away from light pollution to capture clearer and more vibrant night skies.
2. Use a Tripod: A stable tripod is essential to prevent camera shake during long exposures.
3. Fast Wide-Aperture Lens: Use a wide-angle lens with a fast aperture (f/2.8 or wider) to gather more light and capture stars.
4. Manual Mode: Shoot in manual mode to control settings like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.
5. Long Exposure: Use long exposure times (10-30 seconds) to capture stars as trails or points of light.
6. Low ISO Setting: Keep ISO as low as possible to minimise noise in your images.
7. Focus Accurately: Use manual focus and magnify your camera's live view to achieve precise focus on stars or distant objects.
8. Use the 500 Rule: Divide 500 by the focal length of your lens to calculate the maximum exposure time before stars start to trail.
9. White Balance: Set your white balance to "Daylight" or "Tungsten" to maintain natural colour tones.

10. Experiment with Settings: Adjust shutter speed, aperture, and ISO to find the right balance for your desired effect.
11. Shoot in RAW: Capture images in RAW format for better post-processing control over colours and exposure.
12. Starry Landscape Stacking: Capture multiple exposures and stack them to reduce noise and improve overall image quality.
13. Avoid Moonlight: Shoot during a new moon or when the moon is not visible to avoid excessive brightness.
14. Compose Creatively: Incorporate interesting foreground elements to add depth and context to your shots.
15. Bring Extra Batteries: Cold temperatures can drain batteries faster, so have extras on hand.
Remember, practice makes perfect. Experiment with different settings and techniques to find your style and improve your night sky photography skills.
Until next time,
