Capturing the Meaning of Your Dreams
The Hidden Power of Your Sleep State
Do you remember your dreams? Don’t worry if you don’t. Most people have no recollection of what’s occurred in their sleep state - beyond a vague feeling that reflects some of the emotional content of their dreams. We wake up, stumble bleary-eyed out of bed and get ready for the day ahead. Any hint of our dreams is soon forgotten in the rush to start the day. Does that sound familiar to you?
Well, the fact is - we all dream. It’s just that most of us don’t remember. Most of the time, this isn’t particularly significant. Dreams can serve a very practical purpose as we typically use them to analyse the day’s events, process data and arrange the information in an appropriate format. It’s an automatic process of which we are largely and usually blissfully unaware.
But the dream state is also an interface, a meeting place between two very distinctive worlds. Dreams are the nexus, the connection that links the edge of our conscious minds to the unimaginably vast domain of the unconscious. They offer a powerful insight into every aspect of our lives. They represent the product of a profound analysis of our state of being and all the influences that touch our thoughts and feelings and actions.
You see things and you say, ‘Why?'
But I dream things that never were and I say, ‘Why not?’
– George Bernard Shaw
The divide between the conscious mind and the subconscious is highlighted by the fact that these two areas don’t share a common language. The subconscious tends to express itself through the medium of symbolism and we need to understand how the symbols relate to us as individuals. This is especially relevant because our reactions will depend on how we feel about a particular scene, image or symbol. Take dogs, for example. If you love dogs, they can represent friendship, loyalty, trust and a host of positive interpretations. But, if you’re afraid of dogs, they can just as easily represent fear, hostility, danger, threats or mistrust. The difference lies in how you feel about any particular symbol or subject. Fortunately, your subconscious understands exactly how you feel about everything, So, it will naturally select symbols and contexts that are precisely targeted to produce predictable reactions in your dreams.
No matter where you're from, your dreams are valid.
– Lupita Nyong'o
The first task, if you’re not accustomed to remembering your dreams, is to learn to catch the trailing threads of your dream experience as you wake up. This takes a little practice but it quickly offers the reward of becoming a natural habit that allows you to pick up the trail of your dreams practically without effort.
It’s entirely possible that you’ll experience a number of dreams during the course of the night. When you first start to recall them, you might notice that they can easily become telescoped into a single collage of contradictory and confusing images. It’s rather like overlaying a series of separate transparencies, one over another, and then trying to decide what the resulting chaos of images might mean. One of the advantages of learning to recall your dreams is that you’ll soon be able to distinguish each scenario as a distinct bundle of discrete information. Each sequence contains its own insights, guidance and wisdom. It’s like gaining access to your very own personal Cray Mk7 supercomputer. The information is timely, highly relevant to your wellbeing and precisely directed towards your personal needs.
Dreams are today’s answers to tomorrow’s questions.
-??????Edgar Cayce
As you focus on the trailing fragments of your dreams, you’ll find you can pick up the threads and follow the sequence all the way back to the beginning. One of the techniques that can help you to recapture your dream experiences is to make a note of everything that you recall as you wake. Some people keep a notebook by the bed specifically for this purpose.
It’s also very helpful to tell yourself before you go to sleep that you’ll remember your dreams when you wake up. This clearly-stated intention can serve as a signal to the subconscious that you’re now ready to start paying attention to whatever flows out of your dream state.

As you begin to appreciate the complexity and sophistication of your dreams, you might want to encourage a deeper level of co-operation with this extraordinary resource.?This is where you can select a problem or situation that needs to be resolved and imagine that your subconscious will deliver the best possible answer. Place a glass of water by the bed. Take a sip before you go to sleep and tell yourself clearly that, when you wake up and finish the water, you’ll clearly recall whatever your subconscious has revealed to you in your sleep.
This surprisingly simple technique has been used successfully by countless numbers of business people to gain insights into commercial transactions and opportunities. How it works is open to debate but, if the unconscious is collecting data at the rate of forty million bits per second, we should at least credit this massive resource with the capability of producing profound analysis and insights into the world around us. The best way to determine how effective the system can be is to try it for yourself.
That which the dream shows is the shadow of such wisdom as exists in man, even if during his waking state he may know nothing about it. We do not know because we are foolishly wasting our time with outward and perishing things and are asleep in regard to that which is real within ourselves.

At the very least, our dreams are a fabulously rich resource that can help us to see more clearly and understand our circumstances with an extraordinary degree of insight and clarity. At a deeper level, we can encourage our unconscious minds to offer answers to precisely-framed questions that might have proved too taxing for our conscious minds.
Taking a few moments each morning to harvest the wisdom of your dreams can grant you access to an incredibly powerful resource that always has your best interests at heart. Tuning into the subtlety of your personal dreamscape can empower your life and shine a powerful light into your future.
It may be that those who do most, dream most.
