Captain Anshuman Singh, born in 1997 in Bardiha Dalpat village, Uttar Pradesh, was the youngest child of army veteran Subedar Ravi Pratap Singh. Educated at Rashtriya Military School Chail, he developed a strong inclination towards the Armed Forces, leading him to pursue a medical degree at Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) Pune.
Upon graduating, he joined the Indian Army's Medical Corps, dedicated to providing medical care to servicemen. In February 2023, he married Ms. Shristi Singh, an engineer.
During July 2023, Captain Anshuman Singh was serving with the 403 Field Hospital of the 26 Punjab battalion on attachment from 26 Madras deployed in the Siachen Glacier. The area remained inaccessible during the winter months, and the soldiers faced extreme risks in manning forward posts in inhospitable terrain at heights over 19,000 feet under extreme weather conditions. Captain Anshuman Singh, functioning as the Regimental Medical Officer, was responsible for providing medical care to all the troops deployed in the area.

In the early morning hours of 19th July 2023, approximately at 3 a.m., an ammunition stockpile caught fire dangerously close to Captain Anshuman's bunker at the Chandan post. Realizing that many soldiers were trapped inside and needed to be rescued, he leaped into action without caring for his own safety. Despite the perilous surroundings and the threat posed by the fire, he fearlessly ventured into the affected area, determined to save as many of his fellow troops as possible. He managed to rescue a total of seven soldiers, three of them with severe burns. Tragically, during his fourth attempt to rescue more soldiers, he himself got trapped and suffered severe burns. Captain Anshuman Singh succumbed to his injuries, laying down his life at the age of 26 in the service of the nation.
Captain Anshuman Singh was posthumously awarded the nation’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, the "Kirti Chakra," for his outstanding courage, devotion to duty, and supreme sacrifice. He is survived by his father, Subedar Ravi Pratap Singh (Retd), mother, and wife, Smt. Shristi Singh.
