Captain Anisur Rahman Sinha: A Pillar of Bangladesh's Economy and RMG Sector

Pride of RMG -Tribute to Captain Anisur Rahman Sinha: A Pillar of Bangladesh's Economy and RMG Sector

It is with great admiration and respect that I write about Anisur Rahman Sinha, former president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), stands as a towering figure in the history of Bangladesh's Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector. His contributions have not only strengthened the economy but also elevated the global presence of Bangladeshi textiles.

Born into a family with a deep-rooted commitment to the nation's development, Anisur Rahman Sinha's early years were marked by a spirit of leadership and vision. His family instilled in him the values of hard work, dedication, and patriotism, which he carried forward into his professional life.

Since establishing Opex Group in 1984, Anisur Rahman Sinha has built more than two dozen factories, making Opex Group a global name in the industry. The group includes diverse operations such as garments division, bottom, shirt, knit garment, jacket, and sweater factories, dry and wet processing facilities, backward linkage and vertical setup, denim village, and an accessories factory.

At its peak, Opex Group employed around 45,000 people and generated an annual turnover of $500 million. His strategic vision and relentless pursuit of excellence transformed Opex Group into a powerhouse, driving significant export growth and creating thousands of jobs.

Anisur Rahman Sinha extended his business beyond the borders of Bangladesh. Opex & Sinha Textiles established offices in the UK, Hong Kong, China, Germany, and the USA. Opex Fashion Limited, with its liaison office in the UK, was launched in May 2010. This office, led by his only child Tanzia Sinha as the Chief Executive, coordinates and expands the works of all the major buyers worldwide. Opex Fashion UK claims that more than 140 factories in China, India, and Bangladesh are used as production areas for Opex Fashion UK.

However, proving the speculation right, the Opex and Sinha Textile Group shut down its factory operations on October 19. This followed a reduction in work orders and financial losses. A notice signed by the group's Acting Director (administration) Banij Ali on October 18 stated that the group had continued to run the factories by taking loans and selling land to pay salaries, allowances, and other expenses.

The factory was severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as recent unrest by its workers, their reluctance to work, and multiple stoppages in operation. This greatly hampered its ability to continue functioning, leading to a lack of financial consistency to sustain operations. In accordance with section 28 (ka) of the Bangladesh Labor Act, all garment units of the Kanchpur branch, including the garment and wash plant, were declared permanently closed for the safety of the factory and all associated with it.

Excess production capacity was a major issue for Opex and Sinha Group, requiring a minimum production of one and a half crore pieces of clothing per month to utilize full capacity. This large investment wouldn't have been problematic if there was sufficient work. The troubles became evident post the Rana Plaza collapse, where the Accord and Alliance factory appraisals pointed out defects in the buildings, causing many big buyers to turn away, cancel orders, and leave many products in stock.

Beyond his business acumen, Anisur Rahman Sinha was also a key figure in the political landscape of Bangladesh. His involvement in policy-making and advocacy for the RMG sector has left an indelible mark. As an active member of the BGMEA, he worked tirelessly to promote the interests of the industry on both national and international stages.

Anisur Rahman Sinha shared a special bond with my father, Mr. Reaz Uddin of Reaz Garments. Their collaboration in the BGMEA was marked by mutual respect and a shared vision for the future of the RMG sector. I cherish the memories of their discussions, which were always focused on innovation, growth, and the welfare of workers.

My own memories of Anisur Rahman Sinha are filled with admiration and gratitude. His wisdom, kindness, and unwavering commitment to the industry have been a source of inspiration for me. His legacy continues to inspire the new generation of entrepreneurs and industry leaders.

Anisur Rahman Sinha's contributions to the economy and the RMG sector are immeasurable. His leadership and vision have paved the way for countless opportunities and advancements. As we remember him, we honor his legacy and strive to continue his work in building a prosperous and resilient Bangladesh, we all wish may Allah SWT keep him in Good health.
