Capitan Taki found Capitan Claude to explore Kivu Lake

The Capitan Taki team journey continued in Rwanda with a very constructive and open meeting with representatives of Higher Education Council, Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), and the Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB) on water quality monitoring, and Lake Kivu in particular. We explore their extended water portal on Home | Rwanda Water Portal ( rwb.rw ) and identify plenty of opportunities to add on information from remote sensing.

We had the pleasure of visiting the water supply plant providing 62% of Kigali: the Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC) did show us the full treatment and operation chain, including the control room and full digital twin of the installation: impressive!

On Saturday we continue to the Nile Institute where Lode VAN PEE presents us his ambitious and wonderful plans for the Water museum under Global Network of Water Museums (UNESCO-IHP) and the Nile Research Center, including a conference hall. We were honored to be part of the very first meeting at the Nile Institute laboratory area. We needed some improvisation as it is still under construction as you can witness on the picture below. The Capitan Taki project is supporting the Museum with visualizations of water and the research area with models and lab- infrastructure and we are looking forward to seeing the result. Referring to the multitude of museums Lode has been designed as the architect, I am sure it will become another "pearl".

One of the other objectives of Capitan Taki is testing and further developing a water sensors prototype, developed by the VUB. We checked on the Nyabarongo River shore where the floating pontoon of the Nile Institute would be located and how one of the sensors could be installed together with the engineers and specialists of Rwanda Water Board.

We continued our journey to Karongi to visit Lake Kivu and possible places to install the sensors. We walked on a small trail in the Nyungwe National Park to the furthest source of the Nile, it received this name in 2006 by 3 independent researchers. The most southern source of the Nile is located in Burundi.

During the boat trip, we made a stopover at the brand new WOLF hotel of Ivan Wulffaert . From his terras, we enjoyed the magnificent scenery of the rowing fishermen.

In Karongi is the Environment Museum where Aloys Uwimana and Jules gave us an interesting guided tour and explained the methane extraction and energy production process in Lake Kivu.

On our way back to Kigali we saw the drones of Zipline flying around and we decided to make a stop, hoping to visit the center. It was truly impressive on how 400 parcels of medicines and vaccines are delivered every day by Flywings everywhere in Rwanda.
