RCI Community Funds

?In collaboration with a number of other experts, we are forming RCI Community Funds to provide funding to local communities that are facing economic distress. Through an adaptation of the Diversified Community Investment Fund model of the National Coalition for Community Capital, we plan to start and raise capital into a series of community funds for selected communities. We seek to revitalize, catalyze, and impact communities to achieve sufficient economic activity so that these communities can rebuild. We are seeking a financial partner to fund our initial project. FUNDING POINT – ?A CAPITAL COACH’S PERSPECTIVE – PART 4

?As I have shared in the first three Parts of my perspective on selecting investment opportunities, there are many reasons why anyone would reject an opportunity without any consideration for its merits. These reasons are personal, reflecting the preferences of the pitch recipient. These reasons may be trivial, illogical, or seemingly unimportant, but they all have the same result – rejection.

As a capital coach, I have a larger canvas to work with in finding funding based on my network, my knowledge of different deal sources, and my experience in crafting deals to match the interests of investor candidates. Unlike an investor who has only two choices, to invest or to reject the investment, I have a third choice of supporting the capital campaign where I can fix errors or fill gaps.

?If an investment opportunity survives the initial review and cut, then a merit review may be completed. As with the initial review, everyone has a different approach. I look at the products and services as a solution to a problem, to the acceptance of the market, and to the management team. I am looking for flaws in the investment opportunity, the pitch, the planning of the capital campaign, and its execution. If there are no flaws, I still may be able to support the capital campaign by providing more hands. If there are flaws, then I have to determine if I may fix or mitigate the flaws. In many cases, there is nothing I can do. In many cases, I can be of help, but the small business leadership determines that it will not engage my services.

?That said, I look at the entirety of the situation to assess if the proposition of raising funding is reasonable. So many investment opportunities are lacking in critical elements that they are no more than fantasies. If an investment opportunity has survived my initial review, and I find what appear to be fatal flaws, I will point them out to see how the small business management team reacts. Some teams will acknowledge the flaws, and some will deny them. I am ready to walk away without a meaningful acknowledgment of the flaws. If the management team is realistic, coachable, and able to fix the flaws, then I can be of help.

?What I consider to be a flaw may not be considered a flaw by others. Since my objective is to successfully raise funding and since I see flaws where others may not, it is possible that a small business may raise money despite my concerns. A capital campaign does not have to be perfect, but with the odds stacked against successful funding, good management practices dictate fixing everything and anything that increases the risk of failure.

I enjoy being a guest and engaging in conversations with other guests and with Don on building communities and using LinkedIn as a communication channel. Every show is its own adventure as we start with a word of the day and then see where the conversation goes from there.

Don is an expert on LinkedIn, particularly on the use of Live streaming to build brands and communities. We will discuss using LinkedIn as a social media platform for building communities that support raising funding.

All shows where I have been a guest can be viewed on Don Cohen's LinkedIn page under Posts.
