Be capable!

I don't usually make big promises or New Year's wishes.

However, in the first week of this 2024, I had the luxury of quieting my soul and agenda, and reflecting on what I would like to wish for myself and the people I love.

At the end of 2023, I was positively impacted by my colleague Jurgis Figueiredo's speech: “may we be unique, among many, with humility, character and resilience, to face life's challenges. May we have gratitude for the past, enthusiasm for the present and hope for the future, as the world always moves forward and for the better. And may we never miss the opportunity to tell the important people in our lives how much we love them.”

With these words still resonating within me, in my moments of calm and creative idleness, an expression came to mind, recurrently, at various times: be capable. But capable of what?

Be capable of listening. Observing. Being respected. Respecting those who think differently from you. Seeking understanding.

Building. Collaborating. Doing what you say. Setting an example. Helping. Asking for help.

Knowing when to speak and when to be silent.

Assuming that you don't know everything. Asking questions. Being curious. Learning. Unlearning. Relearning.

Trying. Taking risks. Venturing out. Assuming your mistakes. Changing your mind.

Beholding. Looking into the eyes. Having a sparkle in your eyes. Making someone's eyes shine. Seeing.

Admiting your vulnerability. Valuing your humanity. Recognizing and enhancing your talents. Taming your ego.

Forgiving. Forgiving yourself. Dealing with sadness. Crying.

Being happy. Celebrating. Smiling. Making you smile. Inspiring. Being inspired.

Breathing. Not freaking out. Taking care of yourself. Exercising. Eating right. Resting. Sleeping. Having fun. Collecting yourself. Spreading yourself.

Doing nothing.

Knowing what's good for you. Avoiding what hurts you. Knowing what is non-negotiable for you.

Serving. Trusting. Being interested. Living together. Engaging. Relating. Getting excited. Hoping.

Nurturing your friendships and your loves. Hugging. Kissing. Loving. Living. Being grateful.
