Canva Create : Work Re-Designed
The Canva Create event recently took place, and while I wanted to write about it immediately, work commitments held me back. Today, I finally have some time to share my thoughts on something that has truly transformed my life.
Just over a year ago, I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey and co-founded Tikao that prides itself on being future-forward, specialising in new-age categories, brands and consumer cohorts.
In my past roles at various agencies and brands, I often felt dependent on someone with a design skill set. As a copywriter, it was frustrating to wait for designs to come together, watching ideas take forever to materialize.
I’ve always believed everyone is creative and can come up with great ideas, but execution is key. With the advent of AI, creativity has become truly democratic, especially execution. In the last 45 days alone, I must have created close to 1,000 pieces of content—everything from pitch decks and spec ads to social media posts, website designs, research papers, case studies, and storyboards.
If only my high school art teacher could see me now, he’d probably ask for a commission.
Design folks probably feel the same way about copy. Using tools like GPT, Gemini, and Claude (my favorites among many others). While these tools might not always produce perfect copy, they provide great direction and with the right prompts, they can be incredibly useful. It’s like having a well-read friend who can give you great advice—but won't judge you for using spellcheck.
But I digress. Back to Canva.
The templates available for presentations, fonts and other media collection is so extensive that you never have to leave the platform in search of anything else. Simple tools like the magic eraser, picture filters, pixel amplification and shadow matching are just a click away. The platform even learns your brand style and starts suggesting brand colors and font styles—it’s magical.
To me, Canva should position itself like Apple did with design. If you were seen with an Apple product, people would tag you as a creative person. Apple products helped users become better photographers, filmmakers, editors, and musicians. Keynote, in particular, sparked my interest in making sleek presentations. Canva gives me the same superpower feeling. It empowers me to embrace a range of my skills and talents and helps me execute with the quality I aspire to have in my work. It removes dependencies and makes the results faster, better, and cheaper.
I've always believed in the range philosophy. I remember getting inspired after reading David Epstein's book, "Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World." You must read it if you haven't. It typically compares Roger Federer’s way and Tiger Woods’s way of success, though it’s much more dense than that. But please, read it.
With the emergence of tools like Canva, that philosophy rings true every time I look back. I’ve dabbled with filmmaking scripts, worked as a production assistant on shoots, done wedding and fashion photography, gained a diverse category perspective in marketing at ad agencies, made music and edited podcasts for fun. For someone who is essentially curious, this tool is everything you need.
I know there are several other tools available for various aspects of design. Take for example MidJourney, Spline for 3D design, even Adobe is making inroads and I am experimenting with many such tools as we speak. However, the use cases are way different and they come with their own challenges.

Canva has successfully addressed the challenges I mentioned by seamlessly integrating AI tools into their platform. This approach helps users who might otherwise be intimidated by advanced technology to start experimenting and creating with ease, without feeling overwhelmed.
Canva is a tool for the doers. It isn’t for procrastinators, those who romanticize the idea of art and design without taking action. To excel on this platform, you need to dive in, engage in multiple feedback loops, and understand what works and what doesn't. A good sense of taste and knowledge of references would help as well.
It makes creative execution Faster. Better. Cheaper. I’m in love with it.
And I hope to feature in their next keynote (lol)
hey, but a creator is allowed to dream, ammirite?
