Feds launch hate crime investigation after Charleston shooting.
This is the heading to the news announcement. Why do we play into social issues like 'hate crimes', 'climate control', etc? Because it helps the 'news' sell more advertising. The real question is why does this continue, both the action and the deceitful promotion? Because we lack a moral compass in society and have disdain for individual accountability. And, oh by the way, this isn't anything new!
In this case I'd state that the feds have launched an investigation into multiple murders committed by a single person. Killing another person has been wrong since Cain killed Abel and codified into man's law 100's years ago. Calling it a 'hate' crime feeds the 'hate'. I'd say most murders have been 'hate' crimes; 'I hated the guy that had an affair with my wife' 'I hated the person that wouldn't pay his debt'...somewhere they had enough hate for something they were willing to end a life.
What we need to focus on and won't because it takes effort and requires individual accountability, is to love one another.
Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. (Romans 12:9-10 NIV)
Business alike, if we continue ethically/morally wrong approaches through unprincipled and unethical business practices we will continue to see poor long term results, civil decline in the decay of the middle class and continued lack of commitment by employer/employee alike. Treat employees, partners, suppliers, customers with respect. Take the high road through effort and honest interactions. It may take a little longer, it may impact your margin slightly but in the end you'll have a contingency of employees, suppliers and customers that will be committed through tough times. They won't teach you that in business school..its not 'fashionable' for the academic profit centers to promote thousand year old teachings.
What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 1:9 NIV)

9 年Well said, Lloyd. Especially your professional re-statement of the "hate crime" headline into the words "the feds have launched an investigation into multiple murders committed by a single person." The Houston Chronicle is chronically (no pun intended) bad about sensationalizing stories with headlines such as the one you wrote about.

9 年Lloyd, I fully agree with your principle regarding how one should conduct business...and have done my best to live it throughout my career, though I've observed the opposite many times - and too often to the (apparent, sometimes short-term) benefit of the perpetrator(s). Colorful language generally is something I feel we over-use - have you experienced anything 'epic' lately? - though I'm not sure I would blur all murders together into the 'hate' label given my personal interpretation, which is that so-called 'hate' crimes are directed towards classes of people (like blacks in the Charleston case) with whom there is often no legitimate grievance, rather than individuals...with whom there typically is. That said, I may have contrived this definition myself in order to make sense of the news...! I cheer you on in your effort to raise the bar for integrity and decency in the workplace.
