Lately, you might've noticed I've been posting a lot more AI-created artwork, I can't seem to stop...
As someone who has dabbled in various art & creativity settings, I'm amazed by just how impressive AI artwork has gotten even in just the past few months.
Here I will explain my theory of how AI-created art can start to be 'accepted' as a legitimate form of artwork.
Many folks are struggling to accept & enjoy AI-assisted artwork, but as a creator, I think this analogy is apropos.
This image to the right was created with #Midjourney via my text prompts.
Without further ado...
My Betty Crocker Theory of AI Adoption & Legitimacy
You might have heard the story of the Betty Crocker company and the difficulty they encountered while trying to sell their game-changing 'Cake in a Box' product.
The product included essentially EVERYTHING you'd need to whip up a tasty cake without much additional work or ingredients. A true 'Cake in a Box' (it just needed water). For housewives in the 40's & 50's this seemed like a game-changer. But at first, it failed...
Why's that? Well, what they didn't expect was...
The emotions involved in baking/cooking. It didn't feel like you were doing enough to consider yourself actually 'cooking' or 'baking'. It was too easy! How did they solve this?
They actually made it slightly more difficult. By changing it to mention adding a fresh egg (or two) into the mix, it gave it just enough additional work that you could be proud and feel like you're actually baking. Or at least adding your own "homemade goodness" and sales skyrocketed!
I believe AI art creation tools like Midjourney and #DallE2 are, perhaps unintentionally, providing us with a way to create art that makes us add the eggs. Not only is it about creating word prompts to get the artwork you're trying to get, they also give you 4 versions of it. These four versions can be iterated on, upscaled (higher quality) or completely re-ran.
By not just creating 'one' piece of art related to the prompt, the act of iterating, choosing, and essentially 'sculpting' the AI images, gives it that missing egg. It adds enough to the creative process that I think it's honestly one of the keys to which AI art platforms will succeed or suffer. That interaction between AI and artist needs to feel more balanced, otherwise, it's difficult to feel like you had much involvement in making it.
