The awards have been handed and the red carpet has been rolled up, but Cannes Film Festival still lingers on our radar.
While stars were walking the red carpet, into the ‘belly of the beast’ (and 5 star hotel offices), the engine rambled on and movies, big and small, were bought and sold. Variety has a comprehensive review of the acquisitions this year. They note that, more than ever, sales are made on completed projects rather than projects still being developed.
Even Netflix turned a blind eye to their feud with the festival and made a couple of acquisitions. In an opinion piece published yesterday, Indiewire’s David Ehrlich makes the case that despite their feud, the streaming giant and the festival giant have their faiths inextricably intertwined.
We also take a look at the effects of Cannes 2017, as revealed by the latest report from the Europa Cinemas Network. It reveals that last year's Palm d'Or winner, The Square, attracted most audiences to European cinemas last year.
