When marijuana legalization first started gaining momentum in the United States, it was heralded as a progressive step toward criminal justice reform, economic growth and public health benefits all at once. Advocates promised that legal cannabis would eliminate the illicit market, generate tax revenue and ensure a safe, well-regulated industry. That is not how things have turned out.

A Senate bill that would impose new regulations on cannabis-infused beverages in Kentucky took another step toward final passage on Wednesday. Sen. Julie Raque Adams, R-Louisville, told the House Licensing, Occupations and Administrative Regulations Committee that Senate Bill 202 would put reasonable, common sense public health guardrails in place for cannabis-infused beverages.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer proposed a 32% wholesale tax on marijuana as part of her MI Road Ahead plan to raise $470 million. Some Michigan growers worry this could shut their doors. Currently, adult-use marijuana is sold with a 10% excise tax and the standard 6% sales tax, which means that Whitmer's proposal would add a third tax.
