The peace and quiet of the Christmas New Year break is well and truly over.
We've got two new cannabis management office leader resignations already this week, MN & Maryland. In MN an interim leader is being replaced by an interim leader and in Maryland it just sounds as though he's had enough!
Last week in our Karma Koala podcast we noted in an interview with a small local producer that In New Mexico they've had 4 directors in 2 years and the latest one sounds as though he needs to put a rocket up the derrieres of some of those in his charge.
The NY OCM keeps everybody busy with endless meetings and announcements which I suspect distracts attention from structural changes they need to make, and so it goes on.
Let's hop over to California next where Daniel Firtel head honcho at TRP isn't having the best week. Five women are suing the company. The suit says..."An executive panel of TRP men.... “played a significant role in perpetuating the bro culture and gender disparity that is present throughout the company,”. TRP are essentially a subset of Cookies who, if the rumors are true, are furiously shedding jobs around the country. I suspect there's more to come on both these developments.
In DC it's all ramping up for the FDA hearings and also the arrival of Trump 2.0. Business cannabis types around the US are, I imagine, holding their breath. The Donald has been talking about turning Canada into the US.. maybe that'll deal with federally legalising weed!! At least there's good news for the 7 Democrats left in the center of the free world and that is, according to local cannabis rag The Outlaw Report, the fact that by mid year the city should have around 270 legal dispensaries where old CIA hands can pop in and pick up some El Salvador gold.
There been quite a few lawyer announcements this past week. Peter Homberg has departed Dentons for another UK firm gunnercooke, he'll still be based in Berlin. Neil Willner has just announced he's joining Vicente in NY. Marc Goldgrub founder of Candian firm Green Economy Law says he's opening a NY office and over in Portland Kevin Jacoby has joined Harrang Long.
On the psychedelics front it is worth noting that the Colorado program has official started. There appear to be a few things to iron out and it'll be interesting to see by end quarter 1 2025 what the perception of the program is.
And i couldn't let you go without letting you know that Adam Bierman, recognize that name, has just published his opus magnus, Weed Empire. Adam, according to himself is a legend in his own underpants with a blurb that reads..”How I Battled Gangsters, Investment Banks, and the Department of Justice to Build the Cannabis Industry in America”. Today Green Market Report published a piece saying that there were still 3 branded MedMen retail stores in CA, all owned by different outfits.
and.. that.. as they say.. is just another week in cannabis.
