In general the candles are symbolic of the carrying on of the spirit of the person who has perhaps died or is in some dire circumstance or other, and also in Catholicism prayer candles are lit and as the candle shines, it represents God's attention to the matter and the devotion of the person who lit the candle. Often a first candle is lit, then the original flame is used to light two more. Each of these light two more, and so on and so forth until all the candles are lit. This represents the spreading of an idea, or goodwill, or of a person's effect on the people who love and respect him or her.
In Judaism, "lighting candles" means bringing in the sabbath (Shabbat) or holiday (yom tov) by lighting candles with a blessing (bentsch licht--Yiddish). Sometimes a memorial candle is lighted at the same time, or on the anniversary of a death. Sometimes lighting candles refers to the Chanukah candelabrum.
Lighting candles" in the literal sense means just that -- put a flame on some candles. However, there is a figurative use of "lighting candles" to mean the religious obligation of showing gratefulness. In many different religious traditions, the physical act of lighting candles in a religious context is a sacred action. It meant to express more than words can express. For instance, the phrase "light a candle for someone indicates a person's intention to say a prayer for another person.
So many people condemn others for poor behavior, instead of trying to understand why those people behave like that. Atheists condemn religious people for bad behavior of the few may be far less than the 5% of the religious people, and only in some faiths. Atheist say that theists and religious people have issues/problems/negativities and instead of understanding, they condemn. They may say all people of faith are stupid, are defective, are actually subhuman/below human, are in need of comfort and other insults to the believers. While it is true that some actually very few believers are like that, many and most religious people are not like that.
Religion is so huge because it serves the needs of the people. People have a need of religion. Religion makes people happier, improves peoples (mental and physical) health and well being, helps people cope with death anxiety, gives and/or improves people’s morals, gives people community and other positive things it does. Understanding this, even trying to understand this, is lighting a candle instead of cursing the dark (which is condemning people).
"The Candle burns at both Ends, it is said when Husband and Wife are both Spendthrifts." It was, however, derived from the earlier French term of 'brusler la chandelle par les deux bouts', which first appeared in 1611. In the beginning, the phrase referred to the physical act of burning a candle at two ends simultaneously, providing an apt symbol for a waste of resources stemming from multiple points. Candles were once an expensive resource, so using them in a wasteful manner (for a marginal utility return) was generally frowned upon.
However, as time went on, the phrase migrated away from its literal meaning and instead became interpreted as "burning the candle at both ends of the day", i.e. both staying up late and waking up early in order to accomplish something. That is the definition we use today's context is that working tirelessly, heedless of exhaustion or taking the time to rest. It basically is the over-utilization of your resources, to the point of burning them out. Historically, candles were an expensive commodity and burning a candle at both end signified wastefulness.
