CANDIDATE’S REFERENCE AND REFERRALS
The Power of Connections in Recruiting
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a recruiter is the opportunity to meet incredible people from all walks of life, each with their own unique story. Whether I’m sourcing candidates for a role, networking on LinkedIn, or just engaging in everyday conversations, I’m always keeping an eye out for potential talent. The truth is, great connections can be found anywhere—whether it's on the streets, in a coffee shop, or even on a bus.
One of the most powerful ways I discover untapped talent is through referrals and references—an often overlooked goldmine of potential candidates.
A True Story About Bob
Not too long ago, I was vetting a candidate for an executive-level position at an outsourcing company. The client requested a pre-reference check, meaning I reached out to references before the interview process began. The references were strong, and the candidate moved forward. But what happened next was unexpected. A few days later, one of the references, Bob, reached out to me and asked if I had any opportunities for him. Bob wasn’t even on my radar initially, but now I had built a relationship with someone new. Bob went from being a reference to becoming a candidate, and eventually, a highly valued hire at my client’s company for nearly three years.

A True Story About Me
Sometimes, a candidate looks perfect on paper, but after a screening call, it becomes clear they aren’t quite the right fit for the role. Instead of ending the conversation there, I take off my recruiter hat and put on my networking hat. I’ll ask, “Now that you know about the company and the role, do you know any standout professionals who might be a great match?” More often than not, this simple question leads to amazing referrals, expanding my network and uncovering incredible new talent.
The Takeaway
Great people are all around us. Some are perfect for a role today, while others may be the ideal candidate for a future opportunity. By recognizing the value in every interaction—whether it’s a reference check, a referral, or a casual conversation—you open the door to new possibilities. Sometimes, striking gold in recruiting isn’t about where you look, but who you ask.
