Candidates - Do Something Others Don't

How can I stand out when I apply? It's actually simple. Do something that others don't. I've said it time and time again, you are not applying to a job, you are applying to get an interview. Everything you use to apply, is with the intent that it will help you land the interview. Once you get the interview, it's on you to explain how you are the best.

So how can you stand out? Use a Portfolio. Send a PowerPoint that showcases your talents, your experience and what you have done. Send links to a personal website. Send reference letters. Send your LinkedIn profile or work samples (that you are allowed to share). Send a video that explains why that company should give you an interview. Don't be afraid to be bold in your approach and ultimately, be creative! Remember too, all of this needs to be tailored to the job and company that you want. It's time consuming but it will be worth it in the end.

A job that a year ago received 100 applicants over a two week time period is now receiving 700 applicants. Now, more than ever, it is critical to find ways to edge out other candidates during the recruitment process. Want to know how many candidates currently use creative ways to stand out? I'd say 1 out of every 100 applicants. That's not good. However, it provides you an opportunity to swoop in and impress that Recruiter, if you go the extra mile, because others are not.
