That candid permission

That candid permission

I used to overlook asking for permission, especially within my immediate family. However, embarking on my coaching journey made me realize the significance of seeking permission in interactions.

I recall a coaching session with a client where I thought it was acceptable to challenge her. While the session led to a breakthrough moment, I now realize I pushed her boundaries too far, compromising the experience.

The mutual realization between my client and me was a simultaneous 'wow,' yet a subtle bitterness lingered. As we waited for the group event to conclude, we reconvened. It dawned on her that she had waited patiently, hoping I would acknowledge that I should have sought her permission before delving deep into challenging her.

This incident made me reflect, stirring a realization that I rarely engage in such behavior within my inner circle. While occasionally I might consult my parents or siblings, there's an inherent awkwardness around seeking permission. It has often felt acceptable to act without asking, believing I am doing them a favor, but now I see the importance of respectful communication

The incident occurred when my health wasn't at its best. My family and I were on a trip, and as it got late, I expressed my desire to be taken home, saying, 'I want to go home now.' However, my request was taken lightly. In the next moment, my sibling drove us to a new place without even seeking permission.

In that moment, I lost my temper, but it made me realize I was guilty of the same behavior, taking things for granted. It was a wake-up call, making me confront my inhibitions about asking for permission. Sometimes, it takes a strong jolt to understand the importance of respecting others' boundaries.
