THIS WEEK'S HIGH-PERFORMANCE BEHAVIOUR

"Team members voice their honest opinions."

This behaviour goes beyond just open communication; it's a lifeline for high-performing teams. When your team members feel at ease expressing their genuine opinions, your team stands to:

  • Improve Decision-Making: Honest opinions lead to more informed decisions.
  • Promote Innovation: Diverse viewpoints can spark fresh ideas and solutions.
  • Enhance Trust and Transparency: Voicing honest opinions encourages a culture of openness and respect.

Consider Marie’s Story:

Marie, an experienced software engineer, usually stayed quiet during team meetings at her tech company. However, a critical flaw she discovered in a major project forced her to reconsider her silence.

The software promised to revolutionise customer engagement, but Marie’s insight revealed a potentially disastrous issue.

As another meeting echoed with usual agreements, Marie’s anxiety about the project’s failure peaked.

Compelled by responsibility, she interrupted the flow, voicing her concerns.

Initially, her interjection was met with stiff silence, making her fear the repercussions of disrupting harmony.

Yet, the tension broke when the project leader acknowledged her point, prompting others to express their own reservations. The meeting transformed, turning into a vibrant brainstorming session that redirected the project toward a more successful path.

The software launched to acclaim, much to the company’s benefit. Marie's initial fear had transformed into a leadership triumph.

She not only saved the project but also inspired a culture shift toward open communication, proving the profound impact of speaking up.

Her journey from the background to a key influencer demonstrated the value of courage and honest dialogue in fostering innovation and trust.

BEHAVIOUR DRIVERS

Knowing the value of honest communication is one thing. Changing behaviour to facilitate it is another.

Check in with yourself and your team to ensure none of the below negative assumptions are holding your team back from voicing honest opinions!

It’s crucial to embed the positive empowering assumptions into your team’s culture.

ASSUMPTIONS:

? "Expressing my true opinion might cause conflict." This mindset can prevent constructive exchanges.

? "Voicing my honest opinion fosters constructive dialogue." Embracing conflict as a driver for team growth and innovation changes our approach to communication.

? "My opinion might be unpopular." This fear can suppress unique and potentially valuable insights.

? "Unpopular opinions can lead to breakthrough ideas." Recognising the value of diverse thoughts encourages a culture of innovation and respect for different viewpoints.

? "My opinion isn't valuable." This belief undermines the importance of individual contributions.

? "Every opinion enhances our collective understanding." This perspective appreciates all contributions, recognising that each team member adds to our collective intelligence.

? "My opinion might be seen as wrong, and I may be judged as incompetent." This assumption stems from a fixed mindset, believing that being seen as wrong means you’re not good enough.

? "Even if my opinion needs refinement, the dialogue around it will help us all grow our smarts together." This perspective appreciates that we’re all on a growth journey, and the act of sharing and building on each other’s opinions is what grows us all.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE TEAM EXERCISE

Here's an engaging exercise for your next team meeting to encourage the behaviour of voicing honest opinions:

  1. Begin the meeting by discussing the importance of honest communication.
  2. Foster a safe environment for open dialogue, emphasising respect for differing opinions.
  3. Ask each member to share a situation when expressing their honest opinion led to a positive outcome.
  4. Invite each member to share a time when they refrained from voicing their opinion and its impact on the team's decision.
  5. Summarise the shared experiences, highlighting the importance of honest opinions for collective success.

This 15-minute exercise is designed to inspire your team to embrace the habit of voicing honest opinions, leading to a more transparent and innovative work environment.
