"Overcoming fear is the first step towards cancer's defeat,"?

- Sumitarani Das, Businesswoman and survivor of tongue cancer

Hello everyone,?

Happy Rakshabandhan!

Embracing a profound mission, CancerMitr radiates a heartfelt commitment to deliver not just treatment but a haven of unwavering support for those battling cancer. Yet, our conviction extends beyond the realm of treatment alone – we believe in taking the fight right to the root cause.

The seeds of CancerMitr were sown by two incredible souls, Mansi and Niyati, who were profoundly touched by their mother's courageous journey through breast cancer. In this journey, they unearthed gaps in the medical landscape, but the most poignant gap was the lack of awareness about cancer itself. Their mother's account of detecting a lump in her breast prior to diagnosis stirred an awakening within them. This narrative underlines the pivotal role that awareness plays, potentially altering the course of the disease. A simple act of seeking medical guidance could have led to a different outcome.

Our conversations with esteemed medical experts Dr. Ravi Shankar and Dr. Kanchan have cast a spotlight on the shadows of unawareness and late-stage diagnoses. Dr. Ravi Shankar's insight resonates deeply – he highlights the stark reality that oral cancer, in its early stages, should be easily detectable, yet a lack of awareness perpetuates delayed diagnosis. This poignant revelation underscores the significance of spreading awareness, potentially saving lives that might otherwise be lost in the clutches of late-stage diseases.

When it comes to cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, the challenge is even more pronounced. Often, signs and symptoms rear their heads only when the disease has advanced significantly, notably in cases of liver and pancreatic cancer, the latter aptly labelled the "silent killer." To stem this tide, early detection becomes paramount, prompting the call for routine screenings and tests, particularly for those with a familial history of cancer or those who've faced afflictions of the digestive system. Through our shared efforts, we can rewrite the story of cancer, infusing hope and resilience into every step of the journey.

For further insights, Dr. Ravi Shankar's thoughts can be explored in our interview here:?

Within the realm of GI tract cancers, a subtle yet urgent truth emerges – the signs and whispers of these diseases often manifest only in the later stages, casting a shadow over liver and pancreatic cancer, with the latter ominously dubbed the "silent killer." In this delicate dance between health and illness, the key to rewriting this narrative lies in the embrace of early detection. It becomes not just important but an act of profound significance for individuals to partake in routine screenings and tests, akin to a symphony of care orchestrated to safeguard well-being.?

This call resonates particularly deeply for those whose familial tapestries bear the threads of cancer and those who have weathered the storms of digestive ailments. By heeding this call, we illuminate a path of vigilance, casting a warm glow of hope over the road ahead.

Diseases that will require routine monitoring for cancer are as follows;

  • Peptic Ulcer or Helicobacter pylori Infection: This condition is characterized by the presence of sores in the esophagus, stomach, or small intestine (duodenum). Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium notorious for its role in causing ailments such as gastritis and peptic ulcers. Notably, both of these conditions have the potential to develop into cancer over time.
  • Liver Cirrhosis: Liver cirrhosis involves the extensive scarring of the liver, primarily caused by factors such as excessive alcohol consumption, hepatitis infection, and fatty liver resulting from diabetes or obesity. The progression of liver cirrhosis can lead to the development of liver cancer. Hemochromatosis and Wilson's disease are also associated with an increased risk of cancer.
  • Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP): This condition is marked by the abnormal growth of multiple benign tumours or polyps in the intestinal region. If left untreated, FAP can advance into colon cancer. Individuals with a family history of this condition are advised to undergo routine screenings to detect and manage the disease.
  • Pancreatitis: Pancreatitis is characterized by inflammation of the pancreas, resulting in redness and swelling of the organ. It can have both inherited and acquired causes, including gallstones or excessive alcohol consumption. The presence of pancreatitis is linked to an elevated risk of pancreatic cancer.
  • Gallstones: Gallstones arise from the accumulation of bilirubin or cholesterol, forming solid structures within the gallbladder. This condition has the potential to progress into gallbladder cancer.
  • Diabetes: Diabetes, a prevalent metabolic disorder, arises when the body fails to produce sufficient insulin or when the produced insulin loses functionality. This condition is associated with an increased risk of various cancers, including those affecting the liver, pancreas, colon, endometrium, breast, and bladder.
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): GERD is characterized by the backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus. If left untreated or unmonitored, GERD can elevate the risk of developing esophageal cancer.

Embarking on a journey of vigilance, a variety of gentle guardians stand ready to illuminate your path – physical examinations, blood tests, imaging procedures, and the tender whispers of tumour markers for those who might sense a growing concern. In the midst of this embrace, a biopsy lends its reassuring touch, confirming the character of a tumour – benign or, should the case be, malignant.

When it comes to the larger picture of cancer care, the journey involves a combination of various treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. This journey might at first seem daunting, for the idea of routine screening carries with it a complexity of emotions.?

Yet, let us paint it in a different light – a portrait of empowerment.?

For in these moments of early detection, you're arming yourself, crafting a shield against the tides of uncertainty. The invasions remain halted, the journeys to lymph nodes or distant organs curtailed.?

With this, the frequency and cost of treatment are kept under control.?

An inspiring tongue cancer survivor once shared a resonant truth: the courage to face fear is the first and the most important step to conquer cancer. Let these words echo in your heart, for they hold the power to kindle your spirit, leading the charge against this formidable foe.
