A Cancer Survivor's Tips for Navigating COVID-19

A Cancer Survivor's Tips for Navigating COVID-19

As a cancer survivor, I’d love to offer some tips to get through this challenging & isolating time. ?

Much like when I was diagnosed with Lymphoma and had to face a #NewNormal through treatment and after, I see so many similarities in what we are experiencing today. So here is my ‘advice’:?

1. Reach out to your friends and family to let them know you are thinking about them. This is an extremely isolating experience and we need to stay connected to each other. Thank goodness it’s 2020 and everyone has a Zoom account now!?

2. Try to create space for your loved ones to express their vulnerable and raw emotions. Listen to them before you jump to offer solutions. Like really, just listen and validate them.

3. Instead of trying to suppress your negative feelings, find creative outlets to let your own stressors and anxieties roam free. Writing & crafting are some of my most helpful outlets. ?

4. Stand in solidarity. While we may be physically distant from each other, we are truly in this together. Remembering and acknowledging that is the first step to get you over that isolated feeling. ?

5. Advocate for each other, especially people who need your voice to make sure they have their essential needs- financial relief, grocery shopping, transportation, a meal, toilet paper or hand sanitizer- if you are able, give something to someone who needs them more.?

If having cancer and experiencing the isolation and necessity to adjust to a new normal (when I didn’t have a choice), taught me anything- it’s that we need to keep going and give it our best shot and, of course, always remember: Everything’s gunna be okay ????(if you stay home!! ??)
