According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, about 4.75 million people in Bangladesh suffer from various serious diseases due to food poisoning every year.

Various ministries of the government have enacted various laws to suppress this adulteration. There are many laws in force including Sections 272 and 273 of the Penal Code of 1860, Pure Food Ordinance 1959, Pure Food Policy 1967, BSTI Act 2003, Mobile Courts Ordinance 2009, Protection of Consumer Rights Act 2009, Safe Food Act 2013. In all these laws, the court can impose imprisonment from a minimum of 6 months to a maximum of 5 years and a fine of 1 to 10 lakh Taka.
