Canadians Are Furious With Us—Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Blame Them

Canadians Are Furious With Us—Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Blame Them

I had no idea Canadians were so angry at America (at Trump, really).

That was until I talked to a friend of mine who lives near Toronto.

In a moment, I'll tell you what he told me last week.

And as an added bonus, the anger Canadians have is going to affect American Small Businesses. And soon.

Rumblings

There are rumblings of Canadian unhappiness with the United States happening now.

For instance, I've read many articles stating that some Canadian residents were not happy with potential Trump Tariffs...and Trump's attitude toward Canada.

And like you, I've seen the videos showing Canadian's booing when our national anthem was being played. None of this is good. Especially since Canada is like our friendliest neighbor. Plus, they're our top ally.

So, why is our President suddenly so anti-Canada?

I wish I knew.

If you do, please share it in the comments. because I'm confused as heck.

On Canadian Anger

Let me show you how angry Canadians' are.

Let's start with former Canadian Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland.

From The Financial Post:

"Her plan calls for the immediate release of a long list of $200 billion in retaliatory tariffs to deter Trump from making good on his threat to impose 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian imports." That would hurt.

And read what Prime Minister Trudeau said in a recent speech about Trump's Tariffs etc.

Now, here's where it gets interesting.

Words From Canadian Consumers

Last week, I talked to my friend Evan. I asked him how things were going up north.

"Joel, my wife and I just returned from grocery shopping. The number of folks reading labels looking for 'made in Canada' was actually surprising. And impressive. We’re, generally speaking, not a big 'flag waving' country…. Until you piss us off."

I had no idea that was happening. And I told him that real Americans love you guys and gals.

Next, I shared what I learned about angry Canadians' on Threads:

"So, my Canadian friend told me that when he went grocery shopping Friday, he noticed customers reading labels. Why? They wanted to know if the product they were thinking of buying was made in America or made in Canada. Wow."

The response to that 40-word post has been overwhelming. As you'll see...

The Response From Canadian Consumers

Here are some examples of what Canadian citizens said about America-and how angry they are at Trump for doing the stuff he's been doing in not even 30 days time.

"Yup. No American product will ever set foot in this house again. We banned it at home and our workplaces. Even our local McDonald’s can go 30 minutes without a customer. People are paying attention now."

It's Going National

"This is going on nationally. Americans stating that Canadians want to be American are idiots. We have created apps we use to scan products to tell the country of origin. American stuff sits on the shelves. If there's no Canadian option available, we will buy Mexican, Venezuelan, European, anything but American. Canadians are canceling trips to Disney, Canadian snowbirds are canceling their winters South & heading to Europe instead, & many are selling their properties."

American Franchise Companies Are Getting Hit Now

"There are at least 2 apps people can use to scan product barcodes to determine country of origin. Canadians are avoiding US products, and even Canadian manufactured products and restaurants where the parent corporations are US based. Many Canadians are cancelling US travel plans, even though they may be paying cancellation penalties. US streaming services and subscriptions are being cancelled (e.g. Disney, Netflix) and people are refusing to do business with Amazon."

Fist-Bumps

"An 80 year old woman was looking closely at a can of baked beans today. Also on my shopping list, "Which one are we getting?" I asked. We discussed for a few mins then settled on one that was definitely not American, our only criteria. We did a little fist bump and parted ways. This isn't politics, it's personal."

Air Canada Cutting US Flights?

"Air Canada has cut flights to the US due to lack of travelers. The duty free at Peace Arch (Canada/US border crossing outside Vancouver BC) has slashed their hours and say they'll have to cut staff due to a sudden lack of travelers heading to the states. So yeah, we're not impressed with the language coming from your FOTUS and we're taking a stand."

A February U.S. Company Boycott?

"We've been doing that for weeks now and it's just the start. Feb 28 will be a coast to coast boycott of USA retailers operating in Canada. Share that info too, if you care to."

Project 2025

"You bet we are! I am buying anything but US product and the grocery stores are marking and labelling on their shelves to save us time. No more travel to the US. Also researching companies who support Project 2025 and boycotting them. He’s gone and done it now - pissed off the nice Canadians."

You should see some of the other comments. Our neighbors to the north are mad!

Don't Be Mad At Canadians

Canadian citizens are doing what they're supposed to do. They're showing pride in their country.

And unless you're supporting Trump's Tariffs-and some of the other stuff he's doing, and agree with his attitude towards Canada, don't feel guilty about what's happening up north.

Finally, even though Trump has frozen his tariffs until March, it feels like the damage has been done. Although March is just around the corner.

What do you think?

Do you support Trump's Tariffs on Canada?

Do you understand why Canadian citizens are so angry?

Do you own a small business that's already being affected?

Are you an American franchisor or franchisee with stores in Canada worried about a potential hit on your revenue?

I’m a proud Canadian who will purchase Canadian made products, from food items to clothing etc. Why is this? Donald Trump. I do however, feel for all the American people that Elon is kicking out of their jobs, not caring anything about them or their families.

That is really interesting piece and it makes me so sad for the way we are treating our Northern neighbor and ally. If I was them, I’d do the exact same thing.

Trump managed to do what Canadian Politicians cannot…unite Canadians to a common cause. Hell hath no fury like a pissed off Canadian!

Great article Joel! I live in Alberta. I can't stand Trudeau! He is a weak leader who has not helped Alberta to get our Oil and Gas to markets in Europe! Which we will hopefully get put in place ASAP so we wont be so dependent on the U.S. markets. Shame on us for thinking our relationship was solid! Having said that I would take Trudeau in a heart beat over Trump (which should give you some idea of how much I despise the man!!). He's a bully and an embarrassment to your country!! There goes our Amazon account and trust me I am one of those people who is watching labels. I love the Americans who didn't vote for Trump. If I feel sick by his antics how would it feel to be an American who didn't vote for him? My boycott is only on Red States. I dont feel right hurting blue states. I am after all Canadian!

I can advise that most countries the world over are preparing for tariffs which will be in breach of US treaty obligations and they will be very angry and frustrated. Long term it will harm the world economy and the US economy. Tourism to US will suffer as people choose friendlier places.
