Canadian Cities Dominate Top Places to Live for Millennials

Canada has been singled out by millennials as the best country in the world after its three biggest cities made the top 10 of a new survey.

Montreal was second, Toronto fifth and Vancouver sixth in the Nestpick study, which placed German city Berlin top of the pile.

However, Montreal was just 0.04 of a point behind top spot, in a survey that looked at a range of factors including immigration tolerance, nightlife, employment and housing.

All three Canadian cities recorded their best scores of 9.9 out of 10 for immigration tolerance, a result of Canada’s reputation for warmly welcoming and quickly integrating newcomers.

Other countries to feature in the top 10 include London, Amsterdam, Barcelona, New York, Cologne and Manchester.

Other factors for which Montreal scored highly included LGBT friendliness, access to contraception and personal freedom.

The city’s reputation for partying also came through in the report, with strong scores in the nightlife and festival categories.

The startup category for ease of doing business was also a strong suit for Quebec’s largest city.

Meanwhile, transport, food, internet speed and beer were all categories in which Montreal could do better.

Toronto was strong in many of the same categories as Montreal, including scoring higher for in the business category ‘startup’.

The Ontario giant lost ground particularly on housing, with the struggle against a booming market well publicised.

Vancouver beat both Montreal on Toronto on employment, with British Columbia consistently recording the lowest unemployment of all the provinces.

Otherwise, it scored strongly in many of the same areas as its fellow Canadian major cities.

Housing, tourism and transport were significantly low scorers for Vancouver, another Canadian city struggling with a booming property market.

The survey focused on 110 cities and tried to answer the following questions: Is there work available? Can you afford to live a good life? Is the city open and tolerant? And finally, can you have fun?

“Millennials grew up in a shrinking world, where the internet opened doors their parents never could have dreamed of, and budget airlines made those avenues real possibilities,” said ?mer Kücükdere, Managing Director of Nestpick.

“It’s now possible to live and work anywhere in the world, and these opportunities are shaping how our planet will look to future generations.

“We must learn to adapt to the needs of younger people in order to have a thriving economy, and we believe that this ranking offers valuable insights to those cities looking for regeneration from a younger demographic.”
