Canada's FIRST accredited de-escalation course
I lead a double life.
By day, I am a not-so-mild-mannered academic, with an interest in learning theory and the author of a few books.
By evening, I am developing courses for various agencies and organizations. Combining their my instructional knowledge and their content knowledge, we create impactful courses.
One of those courses has taken a life of its own. Working with law enforcement, security professionals, and psychologists, we designed and developed a verbal control tactics course based on the the latest in cognitive behavioral research and its application by expert frontline communicators: Strategic De-escalation. The components of the course are detailed in the concept map below.
Strategic De-escalation is accredited by the Alberta Solicitor General for Peace Officers and Security Professionals — the first accredited course of it's kind in Canada. Designed as an introductory course, Strategic De-escalation presents communication as the first strategy to attempt during situations, which allows for future training to include communication as an integral part of all interactions. (In-service courses for existing employees are forthcoming.)
While designed for security and law enforcement, Strategic De-escalation teaches skills valuable to all authority figures: clerks, medical staff, parents, teachers, administrators, etc.
Strategic De-escalation is taught in a hybrid modality: theory presented online, and practical done with a local instructor. (Full in-person classes are forthcoming.)

(As an aside, my academic background is chemistry. Having friends in law enforcement ... leads to some interesting discussions. Pretty sure some of my law enforcement "friends" are with narcotics. Pretty sure I'm on a few watch lists. Yep, I've been in handcuffs. Training, they call it. I think it's practice for when they come looking for me. :-) )
