Understanding Category-Based Selection

The introduction of category-based selection in Express Entry marks a pivotal shift in how candidates are chosen. This approach focuses on specific attributes or attributes rather than solely relying on the overall CRS score. The initiative aligns with the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act’s (IRPA) amendment in 2022, granting the immigration minister the authority to select candidates who align with Canada’s economic goals and promote the French language outside of Quebec.

Six new categories were introduced, catering to in-demand occupations and individuals with strong French language skills. These categories encompass a diverse range of professions, including healthcare, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) professions, trades, transport, and agriculture and agri-food.

Since the inception of category-based selection, IRCC has conducted draws in each of these categories, except for Agriculture and agri-food. Of note, the category targeting candidates with strong French language abilities has seen the highest number of ITAs issued, totaling 6,900.

Eligibility and Express Entry

To be eligible for Express Entry, candidates must be part of the Express Entry pool and meet the minimum CRS score requirements, which can vary depending on the specific category and stream within the program. The recent Express Entry draw, along with the ongoing series of draws conducted by IRCC, reinforces Canada’s status as a welcoming and diverse nation. Express Entry continues to provide a pathway for skilled individuals to make Canada their new home, contributing to the country’s growth and prosperity.
