Canada's Carbon Tax HURTS Albertans MORE Than MOST Because ...
Canadians - other' than Albertans - will reap the benefits of "their" federal government's increase in the Carbon Tax.
YOU may say >>> But Jay everyone in Canada is getting taxed the same ... so how is it going to HURT Albertans MORE than "most other Canadians?"
Here are 5 ways this HURTS Albertans MORE:
#1 >>> Albertans' Federal Taxes are Already Spent Somewhere else
In government "jargon" this is known as "equalization" and its BIG brother "transfer payments." "Since 1961, Albertans have paid $661 billion more to Ottawa — and by extension to the other provinces — than we have received back in federal spending. Even during the downturn that ravaged Alberta families and businesses, we still punched above our weight for the rest of Canada."
WATCH my 13 minute VIDEO which uses a simple "restaurant analogy" to "easily explain equalization." >>> Would YOU go to a restaurant --- PAY for a STEAK and ACCEPT a HOTDOG instead?
So even BEFORE Canada's Carbon Tax and its increase on April 1, 2023, Albertans were already HURTING more than "other Canadians" from federal taxes - and in particular - "under-spending" by the Canadian Government even though we have "increased" our population by 33% between 2001 and 2016 (Canada's average was 11% during the same time period).
And the Carbon Tax is just going to "pile on" to this rather obvious ---- but under-reported --- UNFAIRNESS.
#2 >>> Albertans LIVE "Farther" NORTH Than Most Other Canadians
Who knew??More people - in Alberta - live north of 50° north latitude THAN all other Canadians - living north of 50 COMBINED.?
WATCH my 7 minute VIDEO to find out how and why that matters to Albertans
#3 >>> Albertans LIVE Farther From Our Largest Market and Trading Partner --- The United States of America (USA)
Yes, I know that Alberta shares its southern border with the USA. However, unlike almost everywhere else in Canada - except for Saskatchewan and Canada's northern territories - most Albertans do not live close to the US border. There is a well-known fact that most Canadians (90% by some estimates) live within 100 miles of the US border. In fact, it is the opposite in Alberta, 93% of Albertans live NORTH of 50 degrees north latitude which is already 111 kilometers from the US border.
And when Albertans to travel to their stretch of US border, what have they achieved? Nothing. Because Montana has 1/4 the population of Alberta.

Whereas, Vancouver-area (British Columbia, Canada) residents are only 41 km away from their US border and 229 km from Seattle, Washington, USA.
Toronto residents are only 62 km from their US - and New York State - border and only 158 km to Buffalo, New York. And here's the kicker, it takes Torontonians about 8 hours - and Montreal residents 6 hours - to drive to New York City (metro area population = 19 million) >>> while it takes Edmontonians 27 hours to drive to Los Angeles (metro area population = 13 million).
There you have it, South Central Canadians, are using a Carbon Tax to further isolate Albertans and their businesses from Canada's largest trading partner even though Alberta has direct access to a US border.
#4 Albertans Support Canada's North MORE than Anyone Else
Clearly, the rest of Canada has lagged behind Alberta when it comes to developing "their" northern reaches. As early as 1949, Albertans built a road to connect to Canada's Northwest Territories at 60 degrees north latitude. And without this road, everything going north would have to be flown by plane, a very expensive enterprise both in money and "carbon dioxide." So let's get this straight, Alberta's development of roads and communities actually helps Canada's interests in the north. And as far as I know, Alberta does not charge the rest of Canada to access "their" territory north of Alberta.
#5 Alberta and Albertans are further PENALIZED for working hard to develop our province into an "international exports" powerhouse.
It could be argued that not every oil and gas producing nation in the world has the same carbon tax that is being inflicted on Albertans. This is going to make it a lot harder for Albertans to compete with other oil/gas producing countries like we have in the past.
In 2019, I made a VIDEO called >>> The Shocking Truth About Alberta and Saskatchewan. It compares the populations, areas, and international exports to other Canadian provinces and then other countries in the world. UPDATE: You may be SHOCKED to know that Alberta's International Exports in 2022 were $203+ Billion >>> WHILE Quebec's --- with double Alberta's population and almost triple Alberta's area --- were only $111 Billion >>>> WHILE Ontario's --- with over triple Alberta's population and almost double Alberta's area ---were only $226 Billion. WOW !
For comparison's sake, in 2018 - Ontario's International exports were about $200 Billion and Quebec's $97 Billion - Alberta's Int'l exports were $120 Billion. As you can see growth has been much smaller for Quebec and Ontario than for Alberta.

Ralph Klein was right --- in March 2000 --- when he said,
"I am frankly discouraged by the state of federal provincial relations.?Even an impartial observer of federal - provincial developments would conclude that?there is an anti-Alberta agenda at work today in Ottawa."?

1 年Well done!!..now what can we do? Information is power!. How do We get our power back? Realign with Saskatchewan? I think we are all tired & broke & the blatant unfairness of eating hot dogs when we paid for steak when we have the best steak in the world! How do we get the "equalization" to include the variables, not just the almighty dollar, is also a huge question that you bring to the table. You can't squeeze dollars from a desert..
