Canada v Jamaica: A Big Americas Clash at Lamport Stadium
PREVIEW – The Canada v Jamaica game will be a big game for Canada, as they face the top ranked team of the Americas, Jamaica at Lamport Stadium on Saturday.
The rankings of both Canada and Jamaica can be seen in this International Rugby League link here.
Canada v Jamaica: A Memorable Game to be Played at Lamport Stadium
Canada Wolverines (Ranked 41st in the world)
The Canada Wolverines are ranked 41st overall in the world right now and will be playing at home for the first time this year. Earlier this year, they faced the U.S., where they drew the game by a scoreline of 16-16. This is what assistant Canada Wolverines head coach, Matt Wyles, said about the game (Source: David Song of PIQUE News Magazines):
The Wolverines enter this game on a high as their ranking spots have gone up by six spots.
Jamaica Reggae Warriors (Ranked 18th in the World)
The 2020s though have been a struggle for Jamaica, that draw with Scotland mentioned earlier is the only result Jamaica got in the 2020s. They have played seven games, and have lost six of them, including their last five games. This included close losses to the U.S. and Wales.
For Jamaica, they had a positive start against Wales but were unable to hold onto the 10-0 lead as Wales came from behind to win 22-16.
What to be wary of with the Reggae Warriors is that a lot of players are UK-based, and a lot of the players play in either the Super League or the Championship of the English Rugby League system. This will not be an easy game for Canada, who will host the best team of the Americas on Saturday.
Also, it looks like Jamaica will not take Canada lightly, as the Jamaica RLA director of rugby, Romeo Monteith, said this about the upcoming games against Canada (and the U.S., which has been played) back in August (Source: European Rugby League):
“Playing annual internationals is crucial to engaging our playing community, sponsors and fans,” said Jamaica RLA director of rugby, Romeo Monteith. “We won't improve as a nation unless we have regular games. It is a priority for us to play Canada and the USA in men and women fixtures annually.”
Head-to-Head and When the Game Will be Played
Both Jamaica and Canada have faced each other nine times overall. Canada has the advantage with a 5-1-3 (W-T-L) record against Jamaica. However, both teams have also not met since 2018, and Jamaica has won the last two games when facing off against Canada. This includes the 2021 Men’s Rugby League World Cup qualification campaign, where Jamaica defeated Canada by a scoreline of 38-8 and therefore eliminated the Canadians from qualifying for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.
The game will be live streamed at 5:00om EST at Lamport Stadium on YouTube: Canada Wolverines v Jamaica Reggae Warriors Game
Additionally, there will also be an Ontario Rugby League, U18 game at 1:00pm EST as well as the Canada Selects v Jamaica Exodus game at 2:30pm EST, also at Lamport Stadium.
