The immigration minister of Canada, Marc Miller, is scheduled to make an announcement today at 10:45 AM Eastern Time regarding the strengthening of integrity in the international student program.?
International students choose Canada for its excellent educational institutions, appealing jobs, and simple immigration. In 2022, 551,405 international students from 184 countries were accepted. International students having Canadian study licenses peaked at 807,750 in 2022.????
The number of overseas students in Canada tripled in 15 years. The rise in wealthy overseas students is a factor. Indian (226,450), Chinese (52,165), and Filipino (23,280) students visited in 2022. The most popular destinations were Ontario and BC, with 411,000 and 164,000 students.
According to Marc Miller, Canada is projected to accommodate approximately 900,000 international students by 2023.
Canadian authorities frequently grant study permits. Between January and June 2023, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) granted over 280,000 study permits, a 77% increase from the previous year. This announcement follows the deportation of over 700 Indian students in Canada earlier this year. Canadian police say their LOAs were fake. After some 2018 and 2019 graduates filed for Canadian permanent status, the scam was exposed.
An Indian immigration specialist allegedly forged LOAs and fled. International students who were unaware of the fraud will not be deported, says IRCC.

Canada will introduce foreign student integrity measures today. Since becoming Canada's immigration minister this summer, Miller has addressed international student integrity. Miller has stated in interviews since August that the Canadian student visa process lacks integrity.
The Senate and Miller agreed that exploiters set "misleading expectations" for international students. IRCC must address this, the minister said. In a Canadian Parliamentary Citizenship and Immigration Committee hearing, he stressed integrity.
